Mrs. French of Boston

A "spirit photograph" of Mrs. French of Boston. The ghost of her son supposedly floats behind her. This picture was taken in 1868 by William Mumler. Spirit photography had enormous appeal during and after the Civil War, as bereaved families sought some form of tangible proof that their loved ones lost during the war still continued their existence in some fashion. The ghostly images were created by darkroom tricks.
