Valuable Stamp on Postal Ballot
Status: Fake
On Tuesday 7th November, a postal ballot for the US Mid-term elections was received in Fort Lauderdale. What set this particular ballot apart from all the others was the 1918 Inverted Jenny stamp affixed to the envelope, along with two stamps dating back to the 1930s, and one dating to WWII.The Inverted Jenny stamps are a run of stamps on which the biplane is printed upside down, and they are extremely rare. Only 700 were produced and, of them, only 100 have ever been owned by members of the public.
Broward County Commissioner John Rodstrom believed the stamp could fetch around $500,000. As the sender was anonymous (also meaning that the ballot was disqualified), and the stamp was used to send a letter, it is now officially government property.
However, at the beginning of December, expert philatelists examined the stamp, comparing it to a genuine Inverted Jenny and a fake. In unfortunate news for John Rodstrom, it’s not an original. The philatelists noted a number of telltale flaws in the stamp, including an incorrect number of border perforations, the stamp's thickness and its colour.
There is a thread about this topic in the forum.

Geez, and I thought *I* was a geek... good work guys.

Stamp collectors generally take geekiness to a whole new level, Richard.

Hey, if you've got a stamp worth potentially a half a million dollar you'd be counting the perforations too.

This gives me an idea for a funny eBay hoax. Auction off an "upside down" stamp, complete with picture of it.
Obviously, it would be a perfectly normal stamp, simply pictured upside down. If you worded the auction accurately, you wouldn't be guilty of defrauding anyone, but it would almost certainly get a lot of attention from sites like Fark.com, etc.

Now THIS is an example of a well-researched and presented hoax entry.
Nice work Flora!

Nice work Flora!
What a sad world we live in where people will pay half a million dollars for a stamp.
Posted by Grain in Bay Area, CA on Thu Dec 07, 2006 at 11:32 AM
Sad world??? I rather think it must be a wonderful world where people can spend time and money on such things, rather than scrounging for the next meal and living on the edge of subsistence. Of course, one can argue about resource allocation but no one ever got rich beggaring his neighbor.
Posted by Sam in Delaware on Thu Dec 07, 2006 at 11:46 AM
??? I'm sorry, but you must live in your own fantasy world. There are millions of people everyday who ARE scrounging for their next meal from no fault of their own in the is world. At the same time, people are sitting in an acution house paying $500,000 for a stamp. At least that is my view sir.

And here you are goofing off on the internet instead of helping them. How can you sleep at night, sir?

Your comment Charybdis is so idiotic (like most of your comments) i'm not going to dignify it with a response.
Posted by Grain in Bay Area, CA on Thu Dec 07, 2006 at 12:17 PM
Thank you for your very dignified response, Grain.

I am the only person that seems to think there is something wrong with the statement "I am not going to dignify that with a response"?
Isn't that a response in and of itself?
I am not trying to take sides (even though I found Chary's comment humourous) it's just a thought that occurred to me as I read through the posts
oh, I guess I better say something relevant...ummm, yeah, stamp collectors are pretty geeky.

Chuck sez:
"I am the only person that seems to think there is something wrong with the statement "I am not going to dignify that with a response"? ...
It's a lot like that classic expression, "no offense, but ...", as in "No offense, buddy, but you've got to be the sorriest blighter I've ever had the misfortune to lay eyes on."
Or, as we say here in Texas, "Bless his/her heart":
"Bless her heart, the poor dear doesn't have much in the looks department, but nobody can say she's overly intellectual."

Sheesh, Charybdis, didn't you realize that when Grain said that *someone* should help the starving, he meant someone ELSE?

"Incorrect number of border perforation, stamp thickness and colour"
Wow why did they need to check the first two?
Anyway,time for a haiku
World WarII stamp
Incorrect perforations
Rodstorm is annoyed
Also Charybdis your comment is actually a rather funny one and it makes a point.Don't listen to Grain. And this is a very dignified responce.I won't dignify that with a responce is a responce, just not a good or well thought out one.

Grain, my income is less than $15,000 per year and I donate my time and money to help people. I wouldn't make such a comment as yours about it being a sad world. I understand that absolute equality in income/resources is impossible and I do not lambast anyone who spends their money as they want. Would you rather have some bureaucrat telling you how to spend your money? I don't feel sorry for the individual who spent the time and effort to fake the stamp, although I am sorry that their vote didn't count.

Is it possible this was inspired by Homer Simpson's dismissal of a sheet of Inverted Jenny stamps at a flea market because the plane was upside down and thus worthless?

Hmmm?

What a sad world we live in when a discussion can be hijacked by some micropenised currymuncher trying to get us to pron sites so he can make huge wads of money while just sitting at his computer looking up incest porn himself, dreaming of screwing his mother.
