Topless Car Wash
Status: Prank
Young women in Shirley, New York held up signs along the parkway advertising a topless car wash. Eager male drivers willingly paid their $5, and drove up to get their car wash. Unfortunately, it turned out to be not quite what they expected. Hidden behind a blue tarp were shirtless male firefighters, who proceeded to wash their car. "A little bit of a bait-and-switch," Assistant Chief Donald Prince admitted. "All the guys back there are all topless." (Link: allaroundphilly.com)|

This is sooo dumb. My girlfriend goes nuts over firemen, doing driveby's past stations with her friends to get glimpses of them(alas no, I'M not a firefighter).
They would have got a LOT more business if they had shirtless firemen out there pulling in the women, rather than tricking guys.

so... they weren't offering to wash convertibles? I'm confused

When I first read this story elsewhere I expected it to show up here. It isn't a hoax the drivers got exactly what they were promised. Of course they were conditioned since "topless" is used almost exclusively for women and that was what they expected to see. Support equal rights for men to be classified as topless.

I have a convertible and I always tell people "I'm going for a topless drive!" Most of them take it the wrong way.

It's just delivering on an old, old joke. (I've seen it used in comedy shows - like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4naOTKx-zaU - and adverts, and I'm sure none of these was the original source...)
And AussieBruce: I think you're making assumptions about the physiques of said firemen... Maybe try watching the clip above:)

How much more ridiculous that we have to be protected against women who choose to be topless in public when men can do so with ease.
At least here in NYC it is a woman's right to be as topless in public as a man.

Oh, I'd be in that car wash like a shot - and I don't even own a car. Firemen are very sexy - I've never seen an ugly fireman. Once we had a fire in the bottom of our building (false alarm - turns out there is such a thing as smoke without fire) and 3 fully-manned fire engines turned up - I was in heaven for that hour.
