Sheesh... I know how to make REAL guacamole and it isn't that hard... I can only assume that Kraft is saving a ton of money on inferior ingredients and marketing it as the genuine article... I doubt it is anywhere near as good as the real deal.

Well, if Altria has been so dishonest over the years with their cigarette brands, I really don't see why anyone would expect them to be honest with their guacamole.

Well, that's what you get for buying guac in a can, sheesh. Guacamole is one of those things you can't really package anyhow. Heck, it's hard enough to keep it in the fridge for more than a day without it getting gross.

Whatever's in that Kraft package, it's definitely not guacamole.

I don't think the problem is so much that real guacamole ingredients (mainly fresh avocadoes)are expensive as that they are highly persihable. As MadCarlotta says, the real thing goes bad in a very short time. Kraft's marketing systems need something with a longer shelf life (think of Velveeta, which lasts practically forever, to the extent that it ever was edible), so the the company banks on being able to sell some sort green paste to people who don't know what real guacamole is.

The pig-tossing story reminds of the Moose Dropping Festival, which is held every year in Talkeetna, Alaska. The Talkeetna town hall gets lots of angry calls and letters from animal lovers who want to know how far they drop the moose, whether the moose wears protective gear, and so on.

Dammit, I wish I had sued over that first. If I had know I could, I would of!

Just what is guacamole anyway? Is there an offical recipe or a law that says it must contain avacado? I think most people who make their own put other in things besides avacodo (mayo, spices, etc). As long as Kraft didn't put avacado on the list of ingredients, which by law must state the contents in order of their percentage of volume (in Canada anyway, I assume it is similar in the USA), then this person doesn't have a case. Duh, read the label before you buy.

Guacamole is practically defined by avocado. It's like making egg salad without the eggs. Sorry, I can't think of a better example.

Your example is an excellent one however if the list of ingredients on the label of Kraft Guacamole doesn't say avocado, then you can't expect it to be there no matter what they call it. There are many examples of products on the market that are not what they appear to be. I have a recipe for bacon and eggs that doesn't use bacon. Scallops sold in grocery stores are often not really scallops. Then there's Chilean sea bass...

If I remember correctly, Alex had a section about this in 'Hippo Eats Dwarf'. Consumers need to be more aware of this type of marketing and if they disapprove they should vote with their wallets and not buy it. Companies will get the message when it hurts their bottom line. I think the person in this particular case is just looking to make a quick buck.

Captain Al, guacamole can contain other things in addition to avocadoes, but it's not guacamole if it's not made chiefly of avocadoes, any more than you can have tomato sauce without tomatoes or potato chips containing no potatoes.

The word guacamole means, basically, mashed avocado salad. It comes from Mexican Spanish, in which "mole" means an edible paste or thick sauce (there are many other kinds of mole besides guacamole) and "aguacate" means avocado (the green or black fruit our British cousins call an "alligator pear"). If you buy a bag of "Sugar," you expect there to be some sugar in there, and if you buy "guacamole," you have a right to expect some avocadoes in it.
