Police Officer Declares Himself Hindu Deity

Status: Impersonating a deity
A male police officer in India has declared himself to be the reincarnation of Radha, the female consort of the Hindu god Krishna. Naturally, he dresses the part:

Devendra Kumar Panda, a 1971 batch officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS), presents an odd sight draped in female attire - complete with nose ring, lipstick, finger and toe nails painted red - and singing hymns in praise of Lord Krishna and dancing. "Lord Krishna has himself assigned me the role of Radha and whatever I am doing is in pursuance of his wishes," 57-year-old Panda told IANS.

However, his wife isn't buying any of it:

On Saturday, Panda chose to put up a full-scale performance before a host of TV cameras in his house. "I see nothing wrong with this. After all, I am carrying out the will of almighty Lord Krishna," he said. An unimpressed Veena has declared her husband as "fake" and refuses to believe his claims about divinity. "He is indulging in all other normal activities, and even chats on the Internet. I am sure all this façade is put up by him to find some excuse for remaining in the company of women, whom he describes as 'Krishna's gopis'," she alleged.

As strategies for picking up women go, that's a pretty elaborate one. I wonder if it actually works.

Ooh-err...I'm so confused with Hindu mythology/religion. I was always under the impression that Krishna was merely an Avatar of Vishnu, not a god in his own right. Although it does appear that the Gaudiya Vaishnavism sect of Hinduism do worship Krishna as the supreme god.

Back on topic, seems a wierd excuse for cross-dressing!

Okay, from what I remember: Lord Krishna is the eighth (I think) incarnation of Vishnu. He was born into a family of cow herders. Think of it as being sort of like the idea of Jesus, being born human and yet still divine. Krishna would go off into the woods and play his flute, and all the gopis (herdswomen) would dance. One of the gopis, Radha, loved Krishna and was his favourite. The bond between Radha and Krishna is supposed to symbolise the bond between the human soul and god. Or something like that.

I thought that the whole thing with religious men is that they aren't allowed to do...woman. And he's using this as a pick up line? 😕

Panda's wife's remarks remind me of the point in "Monty Python's Life of Brian" where Brian's mother sniffs, "He isn't the Messiah ... he's a very naughty boy."

Carmen, while religious men are supposed to be chaste, reincarnated gods can do whatever the hell, er, I mean heaven, they want to do.

Cranky, I think Gopi means "cowherd" and/or "milkmaid," but yeah, it amounts to pretty much the same thing.

Hare Krishna !
This Devendra Kumar is just another "prakrta sahajiya"means false and material pretenders.
This word can be found in the scriptures and how to detect such person is also mentioned.Lord Krishna is not a mere avatar of Vishnu as some claim. He is the source of all Vishnus and Devas.
This is not our concoction but based on the sastra. In Srimad Bhagavat Gita all the verse mention Krishna as the original Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is "Adi Devam" the Primeval Lord, "Ajam" the Unborn and "Vibhum" the Greatest.
It is mentioned in Srimad Bhagavatam "ete chamsa kalah pumsah Kishnastu Bhagavan svayam" this means Lord Krishna is the Oringinal Supreme Personality of Godhead all other incarnation are either His portion of His plenary portion of the portion. What to speak of those who think Krishna as a mere mortal,Read Bhagavad Gita as it is and see what Lord Krishna say about Him and those who think Him as a mortal. He is Parabrahman.Dont speculate without the authority guru, sadhu and sastra. Please try to read the authorise scriptures so that we are not fooled by others. And please dont try to be smarter than the sadhu and sastra.First try to follow.Thank you. Hare Krishna !

we must not forget one thing here, the person being talked about was at a very senior position in one of the elite services in India, so its bit difficult to believe that he did it for cheap popularity, although only Krisna knows best as far as i think, we shouldnt dismiss it straight away, i know this wont go down well with skeptical people but you never know what all is possible in this world. in the end i would like to state that i am not an ignorant Hindu fundamentalist, i have received best education from top colleges both in India and abroad in engineering and management, thanks

Ah, it's the old "prove it's wrong" thing. Um, how about NO? If he's a deity, it's up to him to prove his claim. That's how it works.

If you disagree, try this: Prove that I can't fly, like a bird, without any wires or propulsion device of any kind. No, I won't demonstrate my amazing ability in front of you, but that in no way "proves" that I can't fly. I'm demanding that YOU prove that I CAN'T.

What, you can't? Well, I guess that means that I CAN fly, despite the complete lack of evidence.

Hey, those are the rules you're proposing with regard to your Deity guy.
