Turn Your Dog Into a Sweater

Proving, yet again, that truth is stranger than fiction, I present you with VIP Fibers (I'm assuming this is real... I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be). Send VIP Fibers a bundle of your pet's fur, and they'll turn it into any knit good of your choice, except socks. As the site explains: "Many dogs and cats have a fine and lustrous undercoat so suitable for spinning. It does not, however, have the crimp or elasticity such as found in wool from a sheep, and therefore is not suitable for all projects such as socks." My cat sheds constantly, but it never occurred to me that all that fur on the floor could be put to good use. Now I have the perfect christmas presents for my entire family. (via Red Ferret Journal)

If James Bond had dog or cat allergies, this would also be the purrfect weapon to use against him. But of course, he doesn't. Because he's James Bond. Damn that Bond!

I wonder if the author of the site has considered the economic vibility of skinning the cats or dogs while the fur is still on? It would save time, instead of waiting for the fur to come off. Or would that just be weird and cruel? And would the fur be prone to falling out after the skinning process? Or perhaps they could simply be shaved, like sheep. Perhaps some sort of tanning process would have to be developed... in any case, one has to admire the willingness on the part of a select few nuts to use their spare time figuring out how to turn useless material into even more useless material. Kudos.

Pieces of cat fur are used to charge ebonite sticks with electricity, for demonstrations of polarity of water, for example.

I have a dog fur sweater, knit primarily from what we brushed out of my dog's underfur over the past 4 years, spun by VIP Fibers (along with some Llama) into very soft, odorfree yarn.

To some people this may seem like a waste of time and to others who cheerish their pets...this is an invaluable service. I spin and weave pet fur into a one-of-a-kind memory patch and for these owners...they are delighted. To each his/her own.
