Unfortunate Last Names

I've always thought my last name was pretty bad. And I mean that in the literal sense. 'Boese' means 'bad' (or angry) in German. But its meaning wouldn't matter much if only English-speaking people could pronounce it (it's 'burr-za', as if it had an 'r' in it... not 'boose'). But I shouldn't feel too sorry for myself, because this guy in Brazil, Mr. Reinhardt Adolfo Fuck, has me beat hands down. As far as I can tell, that really is his name. He must get endless jokes about it.

Did business with a company that had a rep whose first name was "Carrion"--I honestly don't think she knew that her name meant 'roadkill'...and then I talked to one of her co-workers, who was named "Tyranny" (Though she probably didn't spell it that way..) Finally, I was struck dumb when I pulled up an account and the first name of the customer was 'Diahrreah'. People out there are just sticking names together, I guess. Think about the names you stick on your kids, people!

I once worked at a technical publishing company in San Diego with a programmer named Wei Wang. I still remember the day I met him. I introduced myself and gave my name. And he lowered his head slightly to glance at the ground and spoke his name, "Wei Wang". I instantly realized the reason for his shamed response and did not giggle or laugh. I continued smiling and said "Glad to meet you Wei." He had been subject to jokes over his name for years. I never joked about his name ever out of courtesy.

P.S. Forgot to mention these...sorry in advance if I am offending anyone, but you have to admit that Chinese names are sometimes irresistably amusing. There is a barber shop in Chinatown, NYC called Mei Dick Barber Shop. (pronounced My Dick) There is also a company on my block called "Five Brothers Hung Phat" (Talk about trying to hype yourself up!) lastly my cousin, the teacher, had a "Fuk Yu" in her class. Really it was pronounced "Fook," but it's close enough....
