Jaleel White Commits Suicide

Status: Hoax
The latest false celebrity death rumor going around concerns Jaleel White (best known for playing Urkel on Family Matters). Supposedly he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. This rumor is old. It was first posted on my site over half a year ago (in the comments to my post titled 'Is this Jaleel White?'). It's no truer now than it was then. I have no idea why it's begun circulating again, but here are the main highlights from the hoax AP report:
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Jaleel White, who played 'nerdy' neighbor Steve Urkel on "Family Matters" found dead Monday. He was 29 years old.
White was pronounced dead on arrival after admission to an LA hospital early Monday morning. The death is being investigated as a suicide.
Born Jaleel Ahmad White, he began his career at the age of three acting in television commercials, before landing guest spots on shows such as "The Jeffersons" and "Mr. Belvedere." It was in 1989 that White landed the role that would make him famous, playing wacky neighbor 'Steve Urkel' on the ABC program "Family Matters."
Following the cancellation of "Family Matters" in 1997, friends claim White became obsessed with the character, and grew despondent, despite further successes as star and producer of the UPN sitcom "Grownups", and as a writer for NBA.com
Neighbor and friend, Bradley Spencer alerted police after hearing what he described as "a loud bang" coming from White's Los Angeles apartment.
Authorities state that upon entering the home they discovered a young African-American male with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Also found was a note, which read simply "Did I do that?", a popular catchphrase from the show.
Like I said, this was all posted on my site over half a year ago. Which means that when people did a Google search for info about Jaleel White committing suicide, my site was one of the first they found. Because of this, my page about Jaleel White started to receive huge amounts of traffic. So much traffic that it was not only slowing the entire site down, but was also slowing other sites that were located on the same server at my web host. Nevin, the technical guy at my web host, has been exchanging emails with me about it all day. What we've done to try to ease the strain on the server is to automatically route people visiting the comments for that old Jaleel White thread to my page about false celebrity death rumors (which is a static page and therefore uses less of the cpu).

Wow this is so funny, my mother asked me about this rumor today and I told her that I had not heard about it, well I see there is a whole dialog about this! Anyway, I will be more than happy to tell my mother that this is not true. Some folks are talking s-t but we all know we loved some TGIF 😊; at least I did. I just feel so sorry for the LOSER who started this rumor, it's crazy that this man can't just live his life without speculation and ridicule, what a sad world we live in:(

i heard about this event from my mom, who received this message from a church friend,2 weeks ago, just now she mention it again, she just did not want to believe it so i decided to reach out to the internet and it was a pleasure to see your sexy face stating that your very much alive, i went and told my mom and her response was "keep living". just for you to know and any one who reads this no matter what your going through taking your life is not the answer always put your life in the man that stills the water, his name is JESUS.

My kid just heard about this (today) and was very shaken up. How can ppl be so irresponsible as to spread such a horrible rumor about someone having killed himself? It's not funny...It's sick!

I am really surprised to hear this was a rumor because I heard it from two different people today!! One person said they even heard it on the radio!! My boss called his wife and told her so it is definately traveling strong. crazy!

I'm heartened to hear that so many people still love me all these years after Family Matters aired. I'm encourage by your love and support, but sadly I have retired from acting and just want to live a quiet life with my wife and daughter now. But who knows, maybe someday when my daughter is grown and I'm looking for something to replace my full-time parenthood I'll try my hand at acting once again. Look for Urkel: The Next Generation in about 15 years!

I am so way out of it, I never even heard the rumour until today when I was watching Vh1's 100 best child stars and you were on and my uncle said, "you know he killed himself". I looked it up straight away, nice to know your alive. I told him it couldn't be true, it would have been all over the tv stations. Jaleel I love that you post on your own blog it adds such a personal touch, a lot of people don't make the time.

Its funny because this is the first time I heard this. I was actually told by an employee at my job and she said her 15 yr. old son told her it was all over the internet. She also told me she saw it on the news. Lol. Thats funny. I can understand the internet but the news on tv. When I saw this site and read on Im happy to hear the truth.

Where do you think the television news gets half of it's stories? It's far too easy to copy something off the net then to do your own research, and television news researchers are just as lazy as everyone else.

Wow... it is good to know that it is all a lie. Whoever started this rumour doesn't have anything better to do. I believe that Jaleel has great talents and a lot of potentials, and I hope he doensn't allow this to get to him. There will always be someone out there that will like to see you fall flat on your face; but all you got to do is live your life for you. As long as you are smiling/ laughing, someone is going to be steaming up hate and jealousy. I hope that he is not dead and very much alive. He is a handsome youngman and I believe he has so much to live for. I wish him the best and my prayers go out to him and his family.

I think its sick that a person(s) would start a rumour of this magnitude. Its very distasteful and shows that they are people in this world that have absolutely nothing to do during the day. To those people who initiated this....GET A JOB AND BUY A LIFE!

I am here to see if this is really true because... it was brought up in church service today (Sunday 30 July 2006). The sermon was about weathering storms... and how suicide is not weathering the storm and Jaleel's name popped up. Since I have never heard of this "RUMOR" before, I needed to investigate.. therefore, when I go to church again, I WILL SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT... because I AM: "Mz. Music Girl!" man, one of my roomates told me that he died because of suicide. He said that one of the guys at school told him that jaleel committed suicide...hah guess its all false...well better go tell him the good news...

Funny. I have been living with that beleive for at least 5 to 8 years, and today (04 August 2006) I found out is an urban legend, probably a hoax started by the "death" of the sitcom itself, not the actors in it. 😊 Just watched an episode and came to google to find out that this rumor gets repeated periodically. Good news anyway

As a child i feel in love with Jaleel White (Urkel) and I am grateful this rumor was a hoax. I wish Jaleel future success and many blessings in his professional and personal careers. It is truly refreshing to know that Jaleel is alive and well because I have respect for the morals and values he brought to us for 9 successful years on the wonderful show we know as family matters. I hope he will keep us posted on his future projects and his well being because as a dedicated fan i (and many many others) are very concerned. God bless.

Celebrity hoaxes about their death are very common and yet not a thing to joke about in any form or fashion. No matter the title of a person or how they have impacted our lives it is still important to remember they are covered by the blood of Jesus with angels commissioned to watch over and protect them. Life and death is in the power of the tongue and speaking death over someone is not a joke. well i just found this out this september 6 2006 and
i was laughing at the fact that who would do something sooooooo dumb and leave a letter saying "did i do that" and when one of someone showed me on the computer in my computer
class i was shocked and did not believe it so in my heart i was like thats not true and to come and to found out that it was not true at all, and to let you know god bless you with what you have now so you better give alot of thanks to god everyday you take your breath and when you go to sleep and wake up.thanks for listening.

I heard the information about Jaleel death from one of my cousin. I didn't believe it. I found out via the internet that he is still alive and even had to attend a university conference at that time. Iwas really relieved and informed my cousins that it was a rumour.
