Hippo Eats Dwarf Completed
On Friday I sent in the final, fully edited manuscript of Hippo Eats Dwarf to my publisher. A few small things remain for me to do. For instance, I need to write the acknowledgments page. But basically it's completed. Now the publisher needs to finish the cover art and start formatting it to look like a real book. But the book has already been listed on Amazon, which means it can now be pre-ordered. So over the next seven months I'll be bugging people to pre-order it, since the more people pre-order it, the easier it is to convince bookstores to stock it and display it prominently. And at $10, it's a bargain. Here's the catalog copy for the book (which may end up being the blurb on the inside cover):

After the Asian tsunami I donated a month's worth of free ad space to a charity, but I suspect that wasn't the most efficient way to help out the disaster victims, because I assume everyone knows where to give money. So instead I'm donating a portion of the ad revenue directly to the Red Cross, and I'll continue to do that for the next few months because the people down there are going to need help for a long time.

Attaboys for you for your donation to the N. O. relief--there need to be more people like you who know what is needed! I have bought one book but will buy more and hope your ad revenues increase exponentially.

Actually, Alex, I am really glad you are donating to someone reliable like the Red Cross. I was just reading an article in the paper about how there are all these fake agencies who were collecting money to "advance tsunami relief." one of these fakes was this guy who was collecting money by mail and planning to use it to pay off debts and buy a new car. he was quoted as saying "everybody needs money" in justification of his actions.

After all the embezzling the Red Cross did with the donations that were made to the victims of 9/11 and you're going to trust them with your money for New Orleans victims... such a dishonest charitable organization. You should do a posting about THEM on your site, not encourage them by donating more for them to steal...

eriC, I'd say about 60% of the material in the book will be new, even to people who have read every word on my site. The rest of the material, site visitors may remember having heard about, but it's still in a new context in the book. What I write about it is new. It was inevitable that there'd be some overlap between the book and the site, but the book is definitely a different creature than the site.

I just took my copy of the first book on holiday with me, in the hope of getting some time to re-read it, (well, re-re-re-read it) but I was foiled by my siblings who kept stealing it so that they could read it instead.

Oh, the Red Cross question. Yeah, I've heard they've had their problems, though I can't really remember what those problems were. But I still feel safer giving to them rather than some charity I've never heard of.
