Goat Sacrifice as Airline Maintence
If I saw mechanics busy sacrificing some goats as I boarded my plane, it wouldn't exactly set me at ease. Still, mechanics in Nepal seem to think it did the trick. From Reuters:
Officials at Nepal's state-run airline have sacrificed two goats to appease Akash Bhairab, the Hindu sky god, following technical problems with one of its Boeing 757 aircraft, the carrier said Tuesday...
The goats were sacrificed in front of the troublesome aircraft Sunday at Nepal's only international airport in Kathmandu in accordance with Hindu traditions, an official said.
"The snag in the plane has now been fixed and the aircraft has resumed its flights," said Raju K.C., a senior airline official, without explaining what the problem had been.

This practice could actually be very effective, if they replaced the goat with the plane mechanic. That would teach them!

I wouldn't feel safe boarding a plane with known mechanical problems with only the assurance of 'We killed two goats so we're good to go now' to explain that the problem is fixed.
And what if Akash Bhairab got pissed while we were flying and decided that he prefers cows to goats? We could drop out of the sky like a stone! big surprise

I think I'd prefer that someone had just fixed the damn pulley or whatever it was that was broken!

Sacrifice a GOAT so the plane would fly right? That's just crazy... everybody knows that if you want the plane to be in full working order, you must sacrifice a virgin. Duh

Now Boeing will have to rewrite their service manuals.

Captain Al, are you sure that the manuals don't already have the requirement for sacrificing goats in them? Federal courts might have made Boeing put the procedure in the manuals to ensure diversity and respect for other cultures. It would be a shame if Boeing had relied on Western cultural beliefs of actually fixing the problem by repairing the broken part.

Chris, are you suggesting the Bush Administration came up with a plan for faith based maintenance?

If I were Akash Bhairab, I'd make the plane crash for killing those poor goats. Of course they probably wouldn't get the message and kill more goats next time.

Actually, it would be more like Clinton had Boeing embrace all cultures and methods of maintenance even if not based upon rational methods as determined by science and technology.
