Fighting Dinosaurs Fossil

Status: Real
image Zkato wants to know if the fossil of fighting dinosaurs found on the website of the Nakasato dinosaur Center is real. The fossil does sound a little too good to be true:

One Protoceratops, a herbivorous (plant-eating) dinosaur, perished in the struggle with a carnivorous theropod, Velociraptor. After their death 80 million years ago, both skeletons were fossilized, then finally unearthed in 1971 in fully articulated forms without having been smashed.

However, not only is it real, it's one of the most famous fossils in the world. It was found in Mongolia in 1971, and was exhibited in 2000 at the American Museum of Natural History. An episode of Discovery Channel's Dinosaur Planet included a computer-graphic reconstruction of the struggle between the protoceratops and the velociraptor. The fighting dinosaur website seems to be circulating around right now because someone linked to it on digg.com.

The big mystery is how the two dinosaurs managed to get buried alive while fighting. Dinosaur Planet's theory is that "the animals were most likely fighting on a rain-soaked sand dune which collapsed preserving them mid-battle." Or they could have gotten stuck in a sudden sandstorm. A few other theories are outlined in a post on cryptozoology.com.

The fossil is real, it was featured in a BBC documentary on velociraptors last year.

The Discovery Channel documentary probably used the same reconstruction as the BBC, I believe they do a lot of co-productions on that sort of thing.

It can never be proved that the two skeletons fossillized at the same moment, and I find it quite unbelievable that any selfrespecting palaeontologist would ever claim so. At least, no archaeologist (I am an archaeologist) would ever dare to do so.

The two skeletons can easily be completely unrelated to each other in terms of time and moment of death and fossilization. They only appear to be related because of the very poor resolution of the typical archaeological/palaeontological/geological record, which creates a spatio-temporal collapse of non-synchronic things and events. In fact, it is most likely they are not related at all. This is basic taphonomic law. In my field of science (archaeology), the naive assumption that things found together are part of one synchronic event is called the "Pompeii Premise".

So my opinion as a professional archaeologist is: "bullshit, and an extreme case of a 'Pompeii Premise'."

They are real and, being entangled come from the same period. they are the only fossil of dinosaurs fighting.

Once you understand teh Electric Universe and Plasma Cosmology, these engimas no longer become so mysterious.

Ummm! It is from the flood according to Genesis chapter 7:17-24.

I think I've seen them both (dinosaur series) on BBC and Discovery Channel. I'm gonna read on more about this tonight but what i don't understand is how is this connected to the bible? I think its way out of the context. It post more questions than answers.

how it's connected to the Bible by 'curtis' is that they were buried in a HURRY in oder to capture them IN the fight...but secular scientists say they were fighting on a rain soaked sand dune that collapsed instantly trapping them in that position. they had to say 'rain soaked' because a dry sand dune wouldn't turn bone into fossil. but this theory is REACHING in it's most ignorant way. THose animals were trapped in MID BITE because they were toppled by a flood with so much moisture and sediment that they were captured in mid bite and preserved that way. to explain it any other way just shows the bias that secular scientist swear biblical scientist have. We are ALL biased. it's just 'where is your starting point of belief?'... to say they sunk in a 'rain-soaked' dune or covered by a really fast WET sand storm shows a SERIOUS bias...the secular scientist REFUSE to admit they actually have. A catastophic flood would explain THESE fossils EASILY. a collapsing 'wet' sand dune or really fast "instant" sand storm and that there is NO WAY it was a catastophic flood are very closed minded ideas. but if they admit that it could have BEEN a flood...then THAT is where their TRUE battle exists! they can't admit to a world wide flood. it DESTROYS their world view. the same people that believe these dinosaurs were captured instantly like this by a collasping wet dune or anything OTHER than a flood are the same ones who probably believe in the 'magic bullet' theory...it's a myth...but plausable if you get enough 'smart' men to 'show' you 'how' on paper. don't take MY word or ANYONE'S...LOOK at the evidence.

While I am christian, I can't support that a flood locked them in combat. A giant rush of sand and water from any direction would have easily pushed the locked formation out of sync and they would have died apart from each other or very vaguely and loosely connected. I can't see what would cause them to be locked like this, but let's just admire our luck that we found them and enjoy some mystery in life instead of scientifically ruining it (I don't believe that with EVERYTHING but c'mon, just enjoy this for what it is).

So wait, Keith. The reason why scientists speculate that a rain soaked dune was the reason these dinosaurs were buried rather than a world wide flood is because we have evidence of dunes collapsing.. you can see this stuff happen in real life, it is not at all unusual. However, there is no geological evidence that a world wide flood ever occured. Speculating that a dune collapsed seems to be far more reasonable (and realistic) than suggesting a world wide flood was responsible. A world wide flood is an extroadanary claim to make considering that would require a mountain of evidence that simply isn't there.

Thats geological evidence, stuff you can find in the ground. Real and compelling evidence.

Not a book.

Remember, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I can't believe anyone would say that a collapsing dune is more implausable than a world wide flood.

No evidence of worldwide flood? are you kidding me? how much have you researched that Olly? There's an incredible amount of evidence, people who belive in a worldwide flood have explinations for things like these dinosaurs, the fossil record etc. Not to mention the over 278 cultures around the world who include a story of a worldwide flood in their traditions! How can you POSSIBLY say that we're the ones with no evidence when you yourself have none, your evidence is based on innacurate carbon dating and assumption that can be easily dissproved. the reason that evolulution is called the THEORY of evolution is because thats what it is, it is a theory based on a lack of substantial evidence and assumption. If it were so unbelieveably, undeniably true and it were proven, please, go right ahead and tell me about it, because that means i woudl be forced to belive you. almost like the earth goes around the sun PROOF. at least he stated his theory once it was proven and not shoddily published like Darwins "Origin of Species". If youve ever read that, Darwin himself says that he was only publishing it so hurridly because he was probably going to die soon so he never actually knew fully what he was talking about until further research. Now thank you and i hope this teaches you to think and research before you make such generalized statements about a large magority of the worlds views.

I really think it's funny how a wonderful find like this was turned into a religious battle, pretty pathetic. Just enjoy the fact that it exists and that we get a better window into the past.
