Brazilian Sand Girl

Status: Real picture (fake girl)
image Check out this picture. Is it a real girl lying in the sand? Or is it a sand sculpture? Hard to tell. The photographer, Jair Ribbeiro, says that it's a sand sculpture:

I was walkin' in the Farol da Barra Beach (Bahia Brazil) last august '04 when i saw this sculpture in the sand.. It was really unbelieveble.. The guy that made this is a genius.. Leonardo!!!!

It actually looks faker in the thumbnail than it does in the larger version. (via Optical Illusions Etc.)

It's a reasonably good sculpture. I'm sure it's not a woman under there. The legs are just a little... wrong.

If you go to the artist's flickr page and hunt around he has a few other angles of the the same sculpture. Interesting photo site.

Thanks for stopping by Optical Illusions Etc...

That is a very good sand sculpture, I think. Few women have such a lush tush compared to the torso; it looks more like a Playboy cartoon woman. Excellent job, though.

sorry, what I meant was I think the top half is a girl sprinkled with sand, and there is more sand on her bottom half to, ahem, accentuate her features.

but then, (sorry I've just looked at the other pics) there are four sculpture things next to each other. I change my vote to good artist

The hair is pretty much a giveaway, you can see the sand head underneath the wig.

Very nice sculpture though, I think the artist used J-Lo as the inspiration for the derriere.

It is defintly a sculpture and not the best that I have seen. Having lived on the coast all of my life I have been to many sand sculpting contests its amazing what they can do.

If its a sculpture the sand has to be brought in from elsewhere. Beach sand is not suited for sand sculptures, as the grains are too rounded. You need angular grains.

Looking at the legs I nevertheless would vote for "sculpture"

Well, if they mixed in glue or some other stuff to be a matrix, then the shape of the sand grains wouldn't be as much of a problem. Or so I would imagine. Plus, it wouldn't fall apart as easily.

Actually, I have done plenty of sand sculptures with beach sand.
Never been any problem with it. You just have to make sure the level of moisture is correct.

But it will fall apart then as soon as it has dried.

There's an annual sand sculpture festival here at Scheveningen beach. They especially bring in riversand.

Not in my experience, it doesn't.
Of course, that's only over the course of about three days. I'm sure it falls apart after that.
However, beach art isn't supposed to be a long-term piece.

My point is: you can sculpt with beach sand. As I made quite clear.

This is a sculpture, albeit a beauty.

The feet and toes are a bit cartoonish to be genuine, though it could well be a real feamle that is sculpted around. The hair is well done though.

I live in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. This sculpture was made in my city. Every day a poor guy makes this kind of art in the sand. He is an artist!!!

gliabreu, it's a shame he also sounds like a starving artist. The guy is pretty damn good at this, and deserves more recognition....
