Boy suspended from school for drawing Jesus

Outrageous! A young boy was suspended from school for drawing a picture of Jesus on the cross! Let's all get worked up about this.

Oh, wait a second. Turns out the story was mostly b.s. cooked up by the boy's father. The boy wasn't suspended, though a teacher did order a psychological evaluation of the boy: "She said the drawing was seen as a potential cry for help when the student identified himself, rather than Jesus, on the cross, which prompted the teacher to alert the school’s principal and staff psychologist. As a result, the boy underwent a psychological evaluation."

An eight-year-old boy was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation and sent home from his US school after drawing a stick-figure of Jesus Christ being crucified. Its really very sad that he is suspended from school.

Let's try to look at this without the filter of religious belief obscuring our view, Mio. Any other drawing of a similarly violent nature would probably cause most teachers to raise an eyebrow. So why is it that this one shouldn't? Just because the crucifix is ubiquitous in Western society doesn't make it any less gruesome.

You may argue that it was an overreaction to have to boy's head examined, but would you say the same if the drawing had been of someone being killed by another method and in a different context? As Robert M. Pirsig said,

I live in the same city that the little boy does. He was never really suspended and it was all a shady story blown way out of proprtion by the little boys father. He was 8 years old and the image that was shown on tv as his drawing was not actually the drawing that he drew in school. There was nver even an assignment like the one the father mentioned. He is just one of many "Taunton's Finest" its a shame to see my city looked at in this light and to see the scum that inhabit some of it getting their 15 minutes of fame while the rest of us good people aren't recognized... Its a shane to see what people will do these days for a few minutes in the limelight, whether its good or bad.
