Hitler Doll
Status: Hoax

About two weeks ago a story started going around alleging that an Adolf Hitler doll, marketed to children, was being sold in the Ukraine. From the
Daily Mail:
One saleswoman said: "It is like Barbie. Kids can undress fuhrer, pin on medals and there's a spare head in the kit to give him a kinder expression on his face.
"He has glasses that are round, in the manner of pacifist Jon Lennon".
The doll will also come with accessories like a miniature Blondi, Hitler's faithful Alsatian who died alongside the Nazi in his bunker in Berlin in 1945.
The doll is dressed in long light-brown cloak, military uniform and jackboots.
According to the saleswoman, should the demand be high, manufacturers will go further and launch a series of themed Third Reich toys, including interiors of Hitler's chancellery, toy concentration camps with barbed wire, barracks and operating models of gas chambers and crematoriums.
But now it seems that the reports of the Hitler Doll were a hoax.
WikiNews reports:
The hoax first appeared two weeks ago and was spread rapidly, when a journalist found a model of Asian origin aimed at adult collecters in a specialist shop in Kiev, and misrepresented the find by failing to give basic details of the facts of the case when he publicised his find. The story propagated and expanded from there.

Too bad. There could be money in a collection of such dolls: Hitler, Goering, Himmler and Goebbels.

Well, it sound more like a semi-hoax. The part about it being marketed to kids was apparently a misrepresentation, but it appears to be true that somebody in Ukraine was selling dolls of Adolf Hitler, which is certainly sick enough.

I'm not sure that qualifies as a 'glass house' comment. The idea is generally considered repugnant regardless of who is offering them for sale.

I have a pair of pedestal-based figures of General Norman Schwartzkoff and General Colin Powell, made for the "Gulf War", sold on the shelves MONTHS before any coalition shots were fired. They were made in China (duh), and both bear strikingly Asian features. Colin Powell somewhat resembles an older Tiger Woods with glasses, and Norman Schwartzkoff looks a bit like Charman Mao with a crew cut. I know they make GWB dolls, but I'm holding out for the one that comes with the big pins you stick in it. Personal preference

Where's Blondi? None of those dolls that Taras linked to had her pictured with the doll.

I don't know which is sicker, Hitler dolls or Schwartzkopf and Powell dolls. Fortunately, I don't have to decide.

I've just tried to follow the link to the Daily Mail article and they seem to have taken it down. Red faces all round, I suspect.
