How to charge an iPod with an onion
Status: Undetermined
I'm not sure what to make of this video. Is it true or false?

It describes how to charge an iPod with an onion. The instructions are that you first poke a hole in the onion, then you soak it in an electrolyte solution (Gatorade). Once the onion has soaked up enough of the Gatorade, you simply push the usb adapter of your iPod's power cable into the onion, and according to the guys who made the video "your iPod will power up and it should begin charging."

I'm sure that the onion would generate some electricity. It's the part about sticking the usb adapter directly into the onion that surprised me. Somehow it just seems too easy. And I don't want to potentially ruin my iPod by testing it out.

Its a fake. All the contacts in a USB plug are made of the same metal, so cannot be used to generate electricty by inserting them into an electrolyte.

On that note, I'm going to test this tommorow with my USB light and see if it gets a charge.

Wish me luck!

Darn! I didn't see that it had already been posted in the forum.

It's a fake. To conduct electric current you need a circuit from negative to positive (or vice versa depending on how you were trained) and the more electroyte you have between the poles the better. I doubt an onion charged with Gatorade would generate enough current to charge anything.

Clearly a fake (as with most videos by that youtube poster). You can see that there is something odd in the way the charging cable coils behind the ipod. This is because there are 2 charging cords, one goes into the onion and then behind the ipod, and the other comes out of the ipod, goes behind it, then down through the book it is sitting on and to a charging port.

It's real. The onion is an akaline food. It's basically making a homemade alakine battery.

its a lie, i tested it in class, conducts a little bit of electricty, but no where near enough for an ipod

This worked for my friend, I think it depends on the type of electrolyte you're using. Cool post, thanks for sharing.
