Two Senior Pranks

In recent weeks, seniors at high schools throughout America have once again been busy dreaming up pranks. Here are two that have made their way to YouTube.

image The Portland Peace Sign: Students at Wilson High School in Portland, Oregon planted $600 worth of marigolds in the shape of a peace sign on the front lawn of the school. That actually seems like quite a nice gesture. A prank that creates something positive instead of being merely destructive or obnoxious. But in a display of a complete lack of humor, school officials are holding one senior solely responsible for the prank and insisting that she pay up to $1,000 for the removal of the flowers. Her mistake was admitting to a local TV news crew that she participated in the prank. The school has turned down offers by parents who were willing to remove the flowers free of charge. The Oregonian has a brief article about it, and a video on YouTube shows a brief view of the peace sign.

image The Foothills Streaker: In a more traditional prank, Cameron Blazevich, a student at Catalina Foothills High School, streaked across the field during graduation wearing only a jock strap and sneakers. YouTube has the footage.

(In related news, football crowds in Bumfuck, Illinois, were shocked when a nude male dressed only in longjohns, pants, shirt, vest, coat, tie, and hat sprinted across the pitch...)

A streaker in a jock-strap?! That man has no balls!

On another note - i love the idea of the marigolds in the peace sign, and Wilson High School is a big fat blue meanie. And can it cost $1000 dollars to rip out a few flowers? If they had any sense of decency or sense they'd keep the flowers in.

My nephew just got arrested for his role in a senior prank... after being advised against it by his father who is a maintenance person at a different high school. His "prank" was the traditional sort of vandalism: paint / soap / chalk / toilet paper on the bushes & building. He ended up being chased by the police for an hour through the woods with police dogs and eventualy eluded them by climbing into the trees and jumping into a pond. The escape was short lived as his accomplice was caught and turned him in to the authorities during his questioning. Not only is he getting criminal charges levelled at him, he will not be able to participate in commencement ceremonies, will have to pay to clean up the mess he made, and probably have to do community service. That was one "prank" that didn't end up being very funny after all, 'eh?

Given the current state of affairs with schools and the situations they have been having to deal with lately, their reaction is understandable...

Somewhat different, though, oppiejoe? As to 'schools and the situations they have been having to deal with lately', I don't know what you're referring to that could possibly have relevance to planting flowers in the shape of a peace sign... if the prank was staging a fake shooting or something, ok. But this?

I wish the picture was clearer...was there something there before that they ripped out to plant the marigolds? The circular shape those paths make kind of seems tailor made for a nice round flower bed. It seems like a nice gesture, actually.

I do think the fine to take out the plants is a little uncool. I mean...so you've got some bad grass for a few weeks until it grows back in. But really, who was HURT by this? And if parents have volunteered to get rid of the plants on their own...it seems like everyone wins. ?

The school just wants to issue a punishment to the student. Totally unfair, but thats why they want her to pay. What lesson will she learn if she gets out of this with no consequences? She really could have done something much worse though.

The seniors at my school, including myself, moved the desks from all the classrooms into a gym, our wrestling room, our student council room and our auditorium. It was amazing because it didn't vandalize, and our administration liked it. We also zip tied all the desks together to make it harder for them to move them back. They ended up having all the students move them back the next day. It was great because it disrupted school as well. We turned off the cameras the night of so they had a 4 1/2 hour taping gap that they couldn't figure out. They had no idea who did it.
