Magic Faucet
Status: Real (not photoshopped)
A picture of an actual scene -- nothing has been digitally manipulated or removed. A lot of people are familiar with this illusion. My wife, for instance, took one look at it and told me that not only did she know what the trick was, but that it's also possible to buy table-top versions of it. But for those who haven't seen it before, it is kind of cool. The trick is that the pipe supplying the water (and holding the faucet up) is concealed by the stream of water. I'm not sure where this picture was taken.

I've seen the table top version in a store before and I must admit I looked at it for a full minute before I figured out how it was doing it!

Yeah, I've seen table-top versions aplenty - usually with a beery theme.

The first time I ever saw this illusion was in the early 60's as a boy in the Bronx visiting a now-defunct amusement park called Freedomland.
Freedomland was, at that time, the largest theme park in the world, larger than Disneyland. It was shaped like the Lower 48 states. In the Southwest section was an attraction called Casa Loca ("Crazy House").
They had one of these "floating faucets" illusions with water pouring into a bucket.
Casa Loca was very similar to the "Vortex" places that exist in a few locations around the country, which purport to "violate the law of gravity."
I was corresponding with James Randi a few months ago about those Vortex tourist traps and I mentioned Casa Loca. Much to my surprise, he told me that he was the person who designed it for the amusement park.

Yeah, but can you turn the water off at the faucet? That would make the illusion complete...

Culligan (they make water softener systems) has been using this attention-getter at home shows for several years.

This isnt new to me. Ive seen these before though I cant remember where. It is pretty easy to work out and I think you could turn the tap off but that would reveal the pipe....

I had the table top version. It had the faucet and an adapter to make it look like it was coming out of a can. Just add food coloring and an empty beer can and it looks like beer endlessly flowing out of the can. It had a mug that caught the liquid. I must say, though, learning how it is done kinda takes the magic out of it. :(

Right, if you turn off the water, you can see the plastic tube which carries it up to the faucet. Where's the fun in THAT?
I haven't been in one of their stores in some time, but Spencer Gifts, found in many malls, used to sell small versions of this illusion.

I saw this illusion at the front of a 'Ripley's believe it or not' museum. It's pretty cool.

I saw one at Ripley's also. I was intrigued for about 3 seconds b/f I tried to put my hand through the stream of water.

How badly did you bang your knuckles, Maegan?
Posted by Cranky Media Guy on Mon Apr 16, 2007 at 02:05 AM
Bad enough not to try it again.

I used to see the table-top version regularly when I was a kid -- it was a regular feature in the Commercial Building at the county fair. A merchant of some kind was using it to sell some product or other, but hey, I was 8 years old and all I cared about was the cool faucet that looked as though it was floating in midair. It beat the heck out of most of the other things you saw in the Commercial Building.

My best friend has one of these in his bar in his basement, and I remember just staring at it before I figured it out. It's pretty cool, though.
