Nigerian Bulldog Scam
Status: Scam
The latest in the long series of what are known as 'Nigerian Scams' is one featuring bulldog puppies. Three red flags went up when Mindy Gorman enquired after a $500 bulldog advertised on the Savannah Morning News website. When she emailed the sellers, they replied with an announcement that the puppies had been sold, but:
"... You're lucky to have mailed at this time because the puppy has just been placed on adoption by one of my customers, who went on a veterinarian work transfer with the West African veterinarian commission Lagos Nigeria, West Africa. He is giving the pup up for adoption because he cant take good care of the pup due to his busy and tight state of work. All he wants is someone that's homely and with a good christian home to adopt this young and lovely human best friend."
Then there was the fact that the seller was in Nigeria. Thirdly, when she offered to pay to the transport of the puppy using Pay Pal, the seller, who identified himself as 'Pastor Harry', said that he would only accept a $500 payment sent to Lagos via Western Union.
Ms Gorman did not go through with the transaction, but another customer in the area lost $900 on the scam.
Jeff Thomas, with the Savannah office of the U.S. Secret Service, was unaware of the Nigerian puppy scam. But the details, including the offer of English bulldogs in a state where the biggest football mascot is the same breed, didn't surprise him.
"These folks are not dumb," he said. "They may do their homework in terms of regional interest. People here are nuts about Georgia football."
Thomas suggests puppy lovers approach any Nigerian offers with skepticism.
The website no longer runs the advertisement.

my dogs stuck at the airport and can't be shipped because the shipping agent needs insurance and taxes for the puppy...and the won't stop bugging me...i found the guys on mlive.com and i keep checking every day just so i can report the ones that seem like the are nigerian to keep others from the scam. Hopefully they get caught!!!

thats the exact ad.and he wrote back saying he could ship the puppy but it would cost me $75.00.but he wouldnt charge me until i received the pup.it seems fishy to me but i went ahead and gave him our local airport info.the ad was posted as charleston,wv.but it turns out the guy is from Cameroon,not sure where that is but anyway,he says he will ship tommorrow.never mentioned anything about the cost for health guarentee,which i thought animals had to have before being shipped.should i be wary.

I recieved this email from a lady with a female bulldog...first she wanted me to pay shipping only (they pay $100, I pay $70) I said NO WAY...I wouldn't pay a dime until I had puppy in my hands (this is current as of today) I expected no response but tonight the email I got instead was Okay, where is your nearest airport and what is your name and address (I figured that if they have a telephone book they could get that information? Right? should I say, fine ship it here is my info? or do you guys think it is a scam? I would think if it were a scam to get money for no dog, they wouldn't agree to ship it first? Or am I getting scammed? Any input would be great!

They are pulling this scam using other breeds of dogs as well. These scumbags are truly taking advantage of people who still believe people are decent. My girlfriend sent three hundred dollars for a dalmation puppy because she knew I would love it. Then came the e-mail from virgin express pets asking for more money. She feels horrible,sad, and embarrassed that she lost the money. I"ll be sure to double and triple check anything else that sounds too good.

I just found out that I got scammed!! It sickens me to see what people will do! Like saying they are a pastor! That is just horrible, the guy who scammed me, his name is "John Akins" His email was "pastor.johnakins@live.com" and when I sent the money to him his sending name was, "Wllance Charles" I just cannot believe that people are so horrible, Im also the stupid one though because all the signs that he was a lier were there, like the church he pastored at, I hecked the website of the church it is called "CHRIST APOSTOLIC CHURCH" it is a real church but I typed his name in the pastor finder thing and him name didn't show up, I denied it and said the website must have been messed up, I lost out on $500!!! Right now Im talking to local law inforcements and I talked to western union so they know of their scam. Just like a lot of the people on here I was told that a puppy I wanted was sold, so the owner refered me to that guy! I just hope people read this so they dot get scamed!! PLEASE BE WARREND!!!!

Unfortunately, Africa is not the place for these type of dogs.He contacted me to find a caring parent that will adopt the dogs back to the USA.He had no time for them, also the african weather is so harsh for them according to him and this is really troubling him and his mission in West Africa. I just do not see how they are getting away with this scam. I talked to one of the head managers at Western Union and he said there goverment has very hard policies on get money....I dont see the supposed toughness of there goverment...Look the people doing this are still getting away with it!!!It is just not right!!!

I just happened to stumble upon this website after talking to a man in Cameroon about buying his daughters yorkie for $120 (the daughter supposedly died on her way home from piano lessons and he can no longer look at the dog without thinking of her). My husband and I want a yorkie so we looked into it. This was an awesome price because the cheepest we have been able to find them was $1000. I was leery but kept responding to him while we searched the web for info. This is the last e-mail that he sent to me.

I responded to an email posted in Creative Loafing. I thouhg that it seemed a little fishy but I decided to send an email just in case. What I got back is almost exactly word for word what another person had been sent but with a slight change to the names and occupations. I really think that it is sad that they can get away with this. I noticed that they had written back to one lady who lived in Arizona (add was posted iin r local paper as well) and then one posted in Ga a week later. There is no telling how much money these people are making off of trusting people who want to adopt or purchase a pet. What is even more sad is that they hide behind religion and peoples faith that people who claim to be from a church or christian. This is the email that I recieved.
