Plane Flies In Front of Moon
Status: Undetermined

There's some debate
over at Flickr concerning whether this image is real or photoshopped. The person who took it (Kris Kros) swears that it's real. But doubts have been raised by Hugo who argues that
"such a crisp capture of a jet, in front of an extremely detailed moon, in complete darkness, with no apparent noise, was quite extraordinary." I can't tell one way or the other. Though Hugo is absolutely right to point out that in almost all pictures of planes flying in front of the moon, the turbulence of the jets is visible... but it's not visible in this picture.

I think Hugo is right.

No contrail?

If you bump the color saturation of the image, some artifacts appear that indicate the plane is from a separate, black & white image. Look between the right wing and the upper part of the fuselage.
Plus, where are the lights of the plane?

Oops... that should read:
Look between the right wing and the engine, and also at the upper part of the fuselage.

I took this picture myself last night:

A photo of the moon like this would require a very short exposure so I would not expect to see the plane's lights. I would however expect to see some sign of the engine exhaust. It should cause some wavering of the moon's image behind the plane.

I think it's a fake...but have no doubts that AqueousBoy's is 100% real!

I read all through this debate on flickr. Both parties in question are on my contact list and I have great respect for each photographer. I don't want to get into the debate, but I will say this...
If a picture is real then there should be some way to prove it. The best defense can be diversion and suddenly blocking someone for asking a question usually implies dishonesty.
At the same time if it is real, and KK doesn't want to reveal how he did it than we should accept that too. But to say a magician never reveals his trick also implies a trick.
As for the attacks on Hugo, let up. He only asked a question and then addressed his sudden block by KK. Anyone would have been a bit ticked off if someone suddenly did that, and even more ticked if it was only over a question.
Trust me there are more problems that we could be debating about than if this is a real picture or not. I don't think it real personally, but it is still a fantastic photo photoshopped or not. KK has a lot of talent, as does Hugo so maybe the focus should be on that.

I'm sure they are both excellent photographers, but this is the Museum of Hoaxes, so of course there's going to be debate about it.

As long as it stays 'debate', and not random snarkiness at one's fellow man, I'm happy.

shouldn't there be stars?
Posted by aiea on Fri Apr 28, 2006 at 11:00 AM
No stars. On a short exposure the brightness of the moon would wash the stars out. You'd need to take a longer exposure shot (which this clearly isn't because of the plane) to see the stars.

Totally fake. Friend of mine has a toy model plane just like that. And the moon is probably from NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day
