Fur-Bearing Crab
Status: Fake (I think)
Dethcheez saw the picture of the
fur-bearing lobster, and emailed me these pictures of a fur-bearing crab. I assume it's fake, with the fur glued on, though I could be wrong. (I would have thought the picture of the furry lobster was fake also, if the creature wasn't written up in a scientific journal.) As Dethcheez points out, the furry crab looks a lot like one of those
troll figurines with the wild Don King hair. Whether real or fake, I'd like to get my hands on one. It would look cool sitting in my office. I'd also like to buy a mounted
fur-bearing trout. I've been searching for one for ages, but haven't been able to find any for sale.

Absolutely, definitely, no doubt in my mind it's a hoax.

I assure you it's real... Kind of... The "fur" isn't really hair, but a thin fibrous form of sea plant that grows on the crabs back... Small sea creatures make their home in/on the plant & when fish go to eat the small creatures living in the plant the crab eats them... The plant works like camouflage for the crab... DC

Certainly a hoax, IMO, but I'll give you the credit for having a decent back story, Dethcheez...

Eriocheir sinensis, the chinese mitten crab, has woolly pincers. So there are more than one non-hoax examples of furry crabs

Dethcheez, can you find any kind of documentation to back up what you're saying? I want to believe you. I really do. But looking at Don King the Crab, I'm having a hard time believing he could be real.

Dethcheez,
the only thing it made me think was what a pathetic hoax that is!
As for the asking price on Ebay of $75 that’s just outrageous. No wonder there's been 0 bids.
Nice find anyway, good game!

"This may be a hoax, but there is an actual crab which was recently discovered in the deep South Pacific. Here's a site explaining the Yeti Crab:
http://www.physorg.com/news11562.html"
That's great... except the link says that's a lobster not a crab.

As we know, there are crabs and other crustaceans with hair-like stuff on their shells, but I'm pretty sure this "Don King Crab" is of the fur-bearing trout genre, not least because the shell of this one looks like it's been cooked.

Ok!!! Ok!!! They're fake...
But think of how cool it would be if they were real...
Not only would they make a tasty dinner, but you could make Crab Fur Jackets out of them...
I'm just saying,

Hi there just stumbled across your ad and wanted to show what I caught while doing some stevedoring in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada. There was a nasty cold front with blowing snow that came roaring in from the north. One of the longshoreman offered to take me fishing and being an avid fisherman, I tagged along. He took me to a secret spot (I had to be blindfolded all the way) where we caught this beauty. They are not renown for their size but are famous for their typically white fur coat. Photo will follow when I figure out how to post it.
May all your fishing dreams be furry!!!!
