Damn, it's almost impossible to keep your vision focused on the picture.

Yes, it's an old illusion (but a good one). As far as I can recall, it has to do with the way our brains are hard-wired to figure out human faces, and the "code" gets tripped by this kind of messed up picture. Another good one is the upside-down messed up face, which looks normal as long as it stays that way (upside-down).

As all good optical illusions, both reveal something about our brains' inner workings.

I agree with Smerk and Dan both, but if you want a real good idea of what this gal looks like, focus on the nose, the correct eyes and mouth will come in clear, as the lower mouth takes the position and basic shape of the chin... FOCUS!!!

It's hard to even notice she has two mouths as well. Gave me a headache staring at it.

I can see how it might be an advantage to have four eyes, but two mouths seems entirely superfluous.
I guess it would make you truly bilingual, though.

I'm severly nearsighted (with an astigmatism), so when I take off my glasses, her face looks completely normal to me (from a distance of about 8 inches; further back and it becomes an unrecognizable blur.)

Also, this is similar to the singers in the original Battlestar Galactica, except their four eyes were all in a row.
