About the Museum
The Museum of Hoaxes is dedicated to promoting knowledge about hoaxes. (Click here for opening hours, etc.) On our blog we post about dubious- sounding claims, and whatever else strikes our fancy. The site is also home to the Hoaxipedia (the museum's online encyclopedia of hoaxes), the Hoax Forum, and the Top 100 April Fools' Day Hoaxes.

The museum was created in 1997 by Alex Boese. He's assisted by a staff of deputy curators and docents. Alex is the author of three books, most recently Elephants on Acid: And Other Bizarre Experiments (which has nothing to do with hoaxes). Check out the list of the Top 20 Most Bizarre Experiments of All Time for a preview.

Rainbow Parties
The recent publication of a novel for teenagers titled RAINBOW PARTY has revived debate about whether or not such 'rainbow parties' are real. As a recent NY Times article explained, "rainbow parties are group oral sex parties in which each girl wears a different shade of lipstick, and each guy tries to emerge sporting every one of the various colors." Such parties are supposedly all the rage with teenagers (kids these days!... what will they think of next?). In the book, a teenage girl has to decide whether or not to go to such a party, but the party ends up never taking place.

The concept of rainbow parties first gained widespread attention back in 2003 when a guest on the Oprah show claimed that all kinds of teenagers were going to these things. But the thing is, tales about rainbow parties always seem to be third-hand: coming from adults who are trying to raise alarms about teenage sexuality. The same NY Times article notes that "Many say rainbow parties are just a new urban legend -- suburban, actually -- not much more trustworthy than the old stories about alligators in the sewer."

I'd have to agree that the rainbow party concept is probably more urban legend than reality. It reminds me of the Jelly Bracelet tale (that teenagers supposedly wear color-coded jelly bracelets to indicate to other kids what kind of sexual acts they're willing to perform). But as always with such things, it may have started out fake, but give it enough time and someone, somewhere, is probably going to be inspired to make it real.

My vote is myth.

Unless it's an all-boy party, I cannot believe in teenage group orgies simply because of the differing sex drive between females and males.

Namely males have one, females don't.

Strange, it was the other way round, in my teenage relationships.

Funnily enough the episode of Oprah (or DR Phil)which discusses this was on in Australia yesterday. It sounds like the typical fear mongering-harbinger-of-doom type ratings winning formula Oprah would use to raise the awareness of this important teenagers-in-crisis issue that is so prevelent in the world today. Whether or not they actually occur doesn't seem to matter, it could and since a book has been written about it it makes it more likely and thats enough proof for some people in the media.
I wonder if the book is on her top ten?

Totally a myth. That's not to say that something like it hasn't happened at some point, somewhere. But to say it's a trend, or that it's happening all the time, is completely false in my opinion.

I remember back when I was in junior high. F**k tabs were the big thing. You'd take the tab off a pop can, and how it broke would determinge what sexual favour you'd get from a girl for it.
Of course, the one thing we all knew was that no matter how many tabs you gave a girl, you'd never get anything in return.
If something was going to happen, it had nothing to do with the tabs.

These parties are very real - at least the seem so. They've been taking place in my dreams since I was 13!!!!! I also have a cousin who sees all kinds of pretty rainbows all the time. But I think that has more to do with his choice of recreational substances.

Myth, same category as the girls with coke-bottles stuck vacuum down there. Just male hormones and wishful thinking

Sorry to tell you all , but this actually does happen. When I was 17 I participated in a few (well 2 to be exact) And it doesn't happen the way they are saying it does. It's more disclosed than that. None of us got BJ's in front of everyone it was always in a bathroom, closet or other non-public place. The first party I went to, I only got one shade, but the second one, I got 3 colors.

Yes Virginia, it actually does happen. When I was a junior in high school I was in with the in group and we had these parties once or twice a month.

Ah, here come the netsibishionists . . .

You three above say you have been to such events. I could crap on a cracker and say it was peanut butter, but I think most people would realise it was not after at least two bites.

Let's be realistic; Consensual sex among men and women of any age group is becoming rarer. Look at the birth rates in most countries, the increasing number of singles and same sex relationships.

Wow, this sounds like a good idea! I would love to have one of these parties!

It's funny how folks who aren't getting any action don't want to believe that other people get it regularly.

Wow! Partyboy is my new hero. He ain't lyin', nd I ain't frontin'. The guy I'm worried about is the fruity virgin who wants to take a dump on a cracker and make a peanut butter sandwich. You ought to write a story about him. Wash your hands after you meet with him, though (hepatitis).

Party boy, the old saying is quite true.

The ones who brag the most get the least.

Unless you can provide proof I suggest you don't make any further comments.

And that goes for the rest of you.
