No Pretty In Pink Sequel
There's a rumor going around that a sequel to the '80s movie Pretty In Pink will come out next year, starring all the original cast: Molly Ringwald, John Cryer, and Andrew McCarthy. It will supposedly revisit the characters from the original movie twenty years later, to find out where they are now. I know the rumor must have spread pretty far because I heard it from my wife last week, and she thinks she heard it on the radio, or somewhere like that. However, the rumor is just a hoax. There is no sequel. The source of the rumor was an April Fool's Day hoax perpetrated by ComingSoon.net. From there it got picked up by the British press, who failed to realize that it was a joke, despite some obvious clues (such as the sources for the story leading to pages that said 'April Fools Day'). The No True Bill blog has the full details.|

Out of all the 80's movies, why on earth would you chose that movie to do a sequel for??? I think Ferris Bueller and Breakfast Club are better candidates.

I guess that's an idea for next April Fool's day. Coming soon, Ferris Finally Grows Up.

37 Candles.

I actually think it could make a good movie. Then again, I don't really like the original that much, so I'm not worried about disgracing it. A sequel could have Ringwold's character finally leaving that rich weiner for Ducky.

It would be ironic if this hoax spurs on an actual sequel; it couldn't be that expensive to do, and it would target people my age, who remember when the film was new - furthermore, Molly Ringwold needs something to tide her into old age and retirement. Harry Dean Stanton probably doesn't look any older, either.
Mind you, 'St Elmo's Fire' or 'The Breakfast Club' would probably be sequelised first (in the former case if they could afford Demi Moore).

Wow! Making it into the museum o hoaxes makes my year!
Yeah, I'm the guy responsible for the gag on ComingSoon, but there was a very specific reason why I chose "Pretty in Pink" as the fodder for my April Fools' Joke. There's an online game called the Hollywood Stock Exchange where you can buy/sell stocks based on movies and stars. For years, they've had a stock for a sequel to Pretty in Pink for no particular reason, because as mentioned here, there's never been a plan for a sequel. It became a bit of a joke on the message boards because vets would post "Buy PINK2!" whenever newbies would ask for "stock tips".
Well, on April Fool's, my editor was on vacation and I was put in charge of the news, so it was just way too tempting to create a fake new story that there really was a sequel in the works. Of course, if anyone actually read the article, it would be pretty obvious it was a joke. (Check out that "quote" from Jon Cryer!) And of course, the fake links. But nope...people jumped on it...I think the stock even went up $2 that night.
I'm sure most CS readers had no idea about the HSX running joke....neither did the Guardian apparently.

Damn, I knew it was too good to be true! Actually, I don't know if the movie would've been good or not. Probably not, but it was fun to fantasize about it for a little while. =)
For what it's worth, I can't stand Blaine and I was always a bit pissed that she chose him at the end of the movie instead of Duckie Dale. I know that I wouldn't have wanted anything more to do with him (Blaine) after what he did. In fact, he might have gotten his little narrow ass kicked. But anyway, great hoax! Maybe John Hughes will take notice of all the interest in a PIP sequel and make one. Then again, maybe not...

The only reason i saw the first one in the theater was because my then girlfriend ,Damon, made me go. I don't think the movie even did that good of business while in theaters in Atlanta (where i was living at the time).I think we could all do without a sequel and that god-awful soundtrack that came with it.

The USA network was developing a sequel to "16 Candles" called "32 Candles" or "36 Candles." There was a lot of talk about this movie back in 2003 but I haven't heard anything recently and there is nothing listed in the IMDB.

Here's a lil' make-believe plot for PIP2:
Steff has gone through a downward spiral and has died on the streets from what the police report say was a pretty heavy overdose. Blaine and Andie, who have been together on and off for years, with a daughter, get a letter post-mortem from Steff, explaining how many regrets he had in his life, begining with Andie, but the letter wasn't finished.
Andie goes on a quest to find out what happened, but BLaine isn't interested and sabotages her. There's only one thing left to do, find the help of Duckie, who by now is a very succesful musician/producer and is still hopelessly in love with Andie, with his contacts and her new-found detective skills they find the truth...
Blaine became a drug dealer right after high-school, when his family had secret financial problems, to mantain their status. He supplied drugs to Steff up to a few months ago. When he stopped, Steff threatened him to expose him to Andie, their daughter and society, and Blaine couldn't let that happen so....Blaine killed Steff! (muahahahahahaha)
So there you are, two birds with one stone, now Andie can move on, with Duckie, whom she should have been from the beggining, realizing she's always been in love with him also, happy happy joy joy!
Ah! wishful thinking never hurt noone, ey?

The original version of Pretty in Pink had Andie (Molly Ringwald) ending up with Duckie. However test audiences didn't react well to it, so they changed the ending to where Andie ends up with Blane(Andrew McCarthy).
Even though the rumour sequel was a hoax, I think a sequel is a great idea. Just about everyone I knew (back when I was 16) thought Andie should have ended up with Duckie. We all felt cheated with the cheesy ending for Duckie and robbed that Andie ended up with souless Blane.
The movie would be a great financial success and the story always felt unfinished to me. The only sad point for me would be see what these actors look like today (together). It would only remind me of how old I have gotten.

this was a big comming of age movie when i was a teen.a part 2 would be great for the teen's today.i would cast molly & Andrew McCarthy as a sucsessful couple with a teen daughter(Hill.Duff)who falls for a new guy (who is poor )while dating james spader's son.(a movie that should go directly to DVD)please e mail me your comments.

Gosh i must of seen pretty in pink like 100 times since it was first released back in the 80s. Nostalgia..

That movie is so outdated that it's pointless to make a sequel. Make something new and fresh instead.
