World Record for Smoking
True or False: Did Stefan Sigmond of Transylvania gain the world record for smoking by smoking 800 cigarettes in less than six minutes? If I hadn't seen the picture I wouldn't have believed it was possible, but apparently it is true, although I'm a bit wary about whether using this 'special wheel-like device' should really count. It doesn't seem like you would be fully smoking all the cigarettes. Anyway, I hate smoking, but I'd love to see someone whip out a device like this at a bar and start puffing away. Search for the Guiness Book of World Records, they are online. If there is a world record, they probably have it posted. I looked at it a while back to see about the world record for a beard. The present record is 17.5 feet held by a guy from Kansas who died in the '30s. The longest present beard is worn by a guy in India whose beard is about 6 feet, much longer than mine, and he's younger so I'll never catch up. Killed that idea for getting into the Book.

It isn't on the site. I remembered that I had to look something up for work (I can't remember what) and I came across this in the FAQ:
Why is my record not on the website?"
There are more than 30,000 record categories in our database, and only a proportion of these records can feature on the website. We currently house about 3,000 records online, but we'll be adding more every week, so make sure to check the site regularly.

Well Boo in The Land of Haggii, you've probably checked it more recently than I have. And your comment triggered a memory from even further back. Someone set the record for being in a tub covered in ice. Guiness accepted the record but said they would not print it in the book, and I presume post on the website, since the new policy was not to print dangerous stunts so as not to encourage behavior that could lead to serious injury or death. I will presume smoking would fall into that prohibition.

does it make a difference how many there are lit? If he takes a drag he's still taking the same amount of smoke in as if he were only smoking one cigarette... Unless he can inhale a hot air balloon, most of the tobacco will just burn up and fall to the ground as ash.

Another vote for it being safe for him to inhale. Yes, to take one drag on all those cigarettes would probably be deadly but it wouldn't be possible for him to do so. While I would think he would get more from this contraption than from a single cigarette he's not going to get anything like 800x as much as he simply won't be drawing that much air from any one cigarette. The only reason he will get any more than with one cigarette is that the air being drawn in will be from the smoke-filled area in front of the cigarettes rather than the basically pure air normally drawn into the cigarette.

I have smoked for a number of years and I can tell you that the device is certainly not capable of being air tight around the cigarettes. Some, if not most of, the smoke would be lost. As far as "Liz" is concerned, if you believe all smokers should die, and actually wish for it, did you not also wish for your father to die? Or did you just mean the smokers you do not know or are related to? Just keep talking on your brain tumor inducing phone to and try to keep living your "low-risk" life. Eat right, exercise, and die on your toilet of a stroke. As far as the lungs in the textbooks kids read now, is the owner of the pink "healthy" lung any less dead? I sincerely hope your father will never see this post...

My 73-year-old father smokes 5 cartons, (1,000 cigarettes) per week. Does anyone know if this qualifies as a world record?

It is not possible! 800 cigarettes in less than six minutes - fake! The volume of lungs can't deliver all smoke!

This guy is a real hard-working one, but not sure whether he could become a world record holder in running
