Duff Beer Scam
Australian news sources are reporting about a woman who has been ordered to serve 18 months probation for selling cases of Duff Beer on eBay. Duff Beer is, of course, Homer Simpson's favorite beer on the Simpson's. At first I thought she was selling imaginary beer, but apparently Duff Beer really does exist. It was made briefly during the 1990s by an Australian Brewery, until they were sued by the makers of the Simpson's and had to stop. However, the beer the woman was selling was imaginary in the sense that she didn't have any cases of Duff Beer, which is why she's now serving probation. I'll have to add Duff Beer to my list of fictional beers that became real. The list now includes Olde Frothingslosh Pale Stale Ale, and Duff (it's a short list).

I can add another fictional beer that became real: Large. It was invented by Robert Rankin in his novels, the "Brentford Trilogy" (there's at least 5 of them) and drunk by characters in a fictitious pub, "The Flying Swan". His fanclub managed to get a brewery to create some for real. Link below.

There was a sort of semi-fictional beer called "Billy" in the late 1970s. It was named for Billy Carter, President Carter's brother. For you younger folks, I probably should explain that Billy Carter was sort of the Roger Clinton of his day. He was famed for his redneck philosophy and prodigious beer consumption, as well as, briefly, being a registered lobbyist for Omar Qaddafy's government (no joke!).
Billy Beer really existed, but by universal consensus (I never tasted it myself) it was so wretched that no one ever bought a second can of it.
I understand a few intact cans of Billy still survive (after all, who wanted to drink it?) and are now high-dollar items on the political memorabilia circuit.

For those of you who are Really too young to remember, Billy Carter and Roger Clinton were oafish, jester-like, drunken or drugged idiotic brothers who hung on to their families coattails, but were really kinda worthless. Hey wait- that all sounds like George W. Bush

Hairy, it really sounds pretty much like any or all of the members of the Bush family.

I got off on a tangent once. No, wait... it was a blue beetle. No, it was grey gummie. Damn it. High School was too far back for me to remember all those street names for pharmaceuticals. Maybe that's because I took too many tangents. Did know that your posts have a bright green aura?

There's also a Duff, a dark bottled beer, currently made in Britain. See the
Oxford Bottled Beer Database. As far as I recall (I used to run the website for a local beer shop) the makers justify the name as independently arrived at via etmyology: dubh = Gaelic for black.
