Carrie Devorah Responds
A few days ago I
posted an entry about a picture taken by photojournalist Carrie Devorah that shows some mysterious blue flashes in the sky above the lighting of the menorah in Washington DC. Carrie suggested the blue flashes might be angels. In my post I disagreed. Last night I got an email from Carrie, and we've now exchanged a few emails back and forth. The emails start off with her suggesting that what I posted was
'potentially slanderous,' and end up with her out-of-nowhere remark that
"Exactly what you are doing contributed to murdering my brother and others like him." Holy Cow! What did I do or say to inspire that? Carrie said that I should feel free to post our correspondence.
So here it is.

OK,maybe beliefs should never be discussed at all...but I donå«t see why youå«re not allowed to have an oppinion.

The woman is clearly a religious fanatic with lots of yada-yada titles ("trained conversation facilitator", I am falling off my chair). So what can you expect, other than angels?

Wow, you say the spots in her picture might be lens flare, and the next thing you know she's accusing you of being some kind of accessory to murdering her brother!
And now SHE wants YOU to apologize.

Besides, angels in the Old Testament weren't really that great anyway. They had fiery swords or were warning people that they were going to be destroyed! Why would you WANT an angel in your picture??

It is obvious from the email exchange that you are attempting to have a rational exchange of ideas where the posibility of such an exchange does not exist. I almost pity her.

...or the "possibility" of proper spelling.

Boy, Alex... first National Geographic, then the Time Machine Fund... now an angry woman named Carrie! Who will be mad at you next? The bench guys?

It seems to me like there's been more and more religious crazies since bush was re-elected *ducks*

Maegan makes an excellent point. In the Bible, every time Angels show up they scare everybody witless. The real angels don't bear much resmblance to the syrupy ones of greeting cards and TV series.
So if you saw someone or something you found comforting and reassuring, you can be sure it wasn't an Angel.

She's clearly got issues. Seriously. Additionally, having read some of her writing online, as well as the exchange with Alex, I'd have to say that the English language is something she barely has a grasp on, considering she is credited as and "author, a photojournalist, [and] is used to covering the news."
Yipes. She seems to be lacking any kind of reason or logic whatsoever. This is the sort of person that cannot be reasoned with no matter what. She has her beliefs and it's clear she won't stray from them. I only wish there was more of an exchange between her and Alex - he could have gotten some great things out of her.

Yep,Meagan has definitely a point...I often wonder why some people are so quick to find "angels"(or even more often,Virgin Mary) in their "paranormal" pictures,I sure wouldnå«t want one in my pictures...but Iå«m not religious so who am I to argue

I think the woman came unglued when her brother was murdered. Seriously unglued. Would probably benefit from professional help.
Be careful dealing with her.

Maegan's point reminds me of a short story by science-fiction writer Ted Chiang:
Hell is the Absence of God, about what the world would be like if old testament style angels really did occasionally visit the earth (it would be unpleasant, to say the least).
And PlantPerson, in your list of people who are mad at me don't forget the 'DNA-Activation' guy Toby Alexander who posted a message in my message board saying that my website "vibrates at such a low frequency that it will bring anyone who visits here down."

I still don't get what your post has to do with the murder of her brother. She seems so obsessed. It's scary!

Hehe. I would suggest Carrie seek some professional help. Maybe get a prescription for Prozac or
other anti-depressant. Let's see all 3 shots, raw
from the disc.
Looks Photoshopped to me...just another attention seeker. Were there any other witnesses?
Googling this photo and event just links back to the original story at WorldNetDaily. She was already in that paper once because of her bro.

Probably best to just back-off. You don't legaly or ethicaly have to, I don't think you did anything that could be regarded as slander... but her brother was recently blown up and I think it's best to cut someone some slack who's had that happen to them.
She's upset, but in all likelyhood she's probably upset at the entire world. I didn't think the original posting was offensive, but it was a bit sarcastic... and for this woman, who's looking to rationalize what has happened to her brother by seeking signs from angels in photographs, it seems that was enough to strike a nerve.
This is what I'd do: keep the post, post the conversation you had with her, but at least for this topic keep the sarcasm and mockery to a minimum.

It seems to me that she really misses her brother. In my opinion the blue flash, to her represented her brother or his angel. Whether you believe in angels or not we can all imagine what it must be like to lose a loved one, what's more is she lost her's in a war that has taken so many that the names have been forgot. On one side Alex is talking about a picture with a blue light and on the other is a sister who, in the season on Hanukah remembered her brother. Her religious beliefs are not understood by Alex and Alex's sophomoric take on it is lost on her. In a day or two we will all forget about this little piece on the net, good for a little distraction from our day. Carrie will not
