About the Museum
The Museum of Hoaxes is dedicated to promoting knowledge about hoaxes. (Click here for opening hours, etc.) On our blog we post about dubious- sounding claims, and whatever else strikes our fancy. The site is also home to the Hoaxipedia (the museum's online encyclopedia of hoaxes), the Hoax Forum, and the Top 100 April Fools' Day Hoaxes.

The museum was created in 1997 by Alex Boese. He's assisted by a staff of deputy curators and docents. Alex is the author of three books, most recently Elephants on Acid: And Other Bizarre Experiments (which has nothing to do with hoaxes). Check out the list of the Top 20 Most Bizarre Experiments of All Time for a preview.

Weird City Names
Here's an amusing list of weird city and town names. Of course, I immediately wondered if all these names were real, so I checked a random sample in Mapquest. Nothing came up for Hornytown, North Carolina (a google search didn't turn up any offical website for it either, though there is a widespread report, probably false, that Hornytown has banned massage parlors). Nor was there a Love Ladies, New Jersey in Mapquest. That doesn't mean Hornytown and Love Ladies don't exist. It's just that I can't find them. However, according to Mapquest it would be possible to take a road trip from Intercourse, Pennsylvania to Hooker, Arkansas, with a quick stop in Hot Coffee, Mississippi, and finishing up in Climax, North Carolina.
Update: Apparently there is a 'Love Ladies' in New Jersey, but it's spelled all as one word: Loveladies, NJ. However, I've still found no evidence that there's a Hornytown in North Carolina, although there is a Hornyhead Mountain.
Update 2: By randomly typing words into Mapquest it turns out to be quite easy to come up with weird place names. In just a few minutes I came up with these: Shite Creek, Idaho; Trash Branch, Alabama; Weird Lake, Minnesota; and Dork Canal, Oregon.

yea there is a community called Horneytown, its just a crossroads though, with a gas station a grill and a volunteer fire department. its not officially a town. and yes there was a massage parlor located there but the COUNTY shut it down since they are not allowed in that county. Horneytown has no mayor or governing body

Horneytown IS a REAL town. It is right outside of High Point(off old 311, called High Point Rd) and 66(kernersville). There is a small grill there(Tucker's Grill) AND a Horneytown fire department, it is a volunteer station. I know this BC my husband is on the Horneytown fire department! You will not find "horneytown, NC" on mapquest though. And the thing about banning massage parlor's is NOT true, ACTUALLY it was that Horneytown had the FIRST massage parlor!! To find Horneytown on a map you would have to search for Horneytown Rd. Which is near Curry Rd, High Point/Walburg Rd and as i said High Point Rd( old 311). Hope this clears everything up!! They also SELL horneytown Fire Department T-shirts at the fire station!! The station number is 29!!

There is an area in North Carolina that is called "Horneytown", it is not an actual city name, but they do have there own volunteer fire station. The area was named that because some the first residents last name was Horney (bad for them, lol. It is located between High Point and Kernersville. I acutally have a "Horneytown North Carolina" license plate, but would not dare put it on my car! I don't know about the whole massage palor thing, but anything is possible. Hope this helps!

We have a No Name, Colorado, just outside of Glenwood Springs. It's not really a town, more of an exit. It's exit 119 on 1-70 - I believe you can only access it going east. The only reason I've ever taken it is to access it as a put in or take out point for rafting the Shoshone part of the Colorado River.

We went to HorneyTown, NC a couple of years ago and bought t-shirts at the local Fire House and license plates at the local store. It's tiny but it's there. And if you keep driving, you will (excuse the pun) come across Climax.

Horney Town had a website last year but now it's gone. I found this though:

http://cms.firehouse.com/dept/HighPointNC

I bet you can still get t-shirts there.

Hi All,

I just wanted to let you know that there is in fact a place named Horneytown, NC. I live about two miles from there. It may not be on mapquest, but it is still there. The town and the fire department were annexed into the City of High Point a couple of years ago, but the Horneytown Fire Department is still there, just across from an old gas station and Tuckers Grill. It is located at the intersection of Old 311 (High Point Rd.) and Hwy 66. Just thought you would like to hear from a native of the area that it does exist.
