When you two people ask if he actually did pose as someone else, you are proving that you did not pay attention at all. Obviously it is true if they have millions of sites saying that he did pose as Silence Dogood. Search enough and I assure you that you will find one site that even shows scans of the Silence Dogood letters. National Treasure is my favorite movie, if the treasure is out there, someone will find it. I've read on a site that there are a ton of people searching for the treasure, if they want it, they'll find it. Watch the movie enough times, and I think you'll be able to find it too...if you steal the Declaration.

I've also seen NATIONAL TREASURE and i wounder if there really is a bunch of clues that lead 2 a real treasure and i think it would be cool to do the things that Nicholas Cage did in the movie, in real life.

I am glad National Treasure has sparked some imaginations. Virtually all the historical facts in the movie are accurate. The treasure of the Knights Templar existed. No one knows where it eventually went, though most believe it was simply split up and lost piecemeal over the centuries.
I think it should be noted that the movie doesn't imply that Franklin's letters were written as clues. Any book or collection of writings could be used for the cipher. The letters were used because the cipher requires anyone reading the message to literally be on the same page - and line. One could never be sure that one edition of, say, the Bible, is printed identically to any other. Especially over the course of generations. By using the original letters as the basis, it guarantees the reader will get the right message. Only the originals (or exact copies) would work - not transcribed and reproduced letters.
Ben Franklin was an incomparable genius. If you haven't read his autobiography, do it! Hey - maybe there are cluse in there, too!
And read every word of the Federalist Papers, too.

Ye who wants to know the truth, must search inside before looking the outside. Ye who whants peace must understand that life is a journey in which we need to make our own path instead folowing one thas have been already made. Ye who believe that the declaration of Independence is a National Treasure is really a true american as well as Paul Revere and Mr. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN. Ye who understand the meaning of liberty, is the one that knows very well its spirit and know how much worth the sacrifice. Ye who wants to know what is plenitude and what is liberty, freedom and most important what we are must know first that the key lies within us;

hi, I just wanted to leave a comment about the Silence Dogood letters. First of all my favorite movie in the entire world is National Treasure. Whoever wrote the script and had to dig through all the historical evidence to come up with that film is TOTAL genius! That movie is amazing! I learned soo much that my head started hurting! anyway, I do believe, of course, that the letters are real because there IS evedence to prove such an accusation. However, there is not evidence to prove that the treasure is real, but I believe it is there nonetheless! Mostly, because I imagine it to be true. Hopefully, someday someone will find it without having to steal the Declaration of Independence to prove it! I love history, maybe someday I'll find it one my own.

Responding to Nancy Drew I know about American History even though I am not american. What happens today is that people forgot their past. And that is really deceptioning because if you could see what happened hundreds of years ago you could see what means the present. National Treasure is JUST A MOVIE. Even there are real Facts. But we must learn to distinguish between reality and imagination. But there is some things unrevealed out there. People, we are the sons of the fathers of the independence. Each one of us has a PAul Revere, BEnjamin Franklin or other revolutionary inside. What stop us to show our potential is the thing called RUTINE. we must reveal ourselves. We can do our best for this country that is going down a deep dark well. We can make a difference. Even I am young I know I can make a difference. Remember we all have our potentials inside. We must unlock it. We can make a difference in this world, because the end of the days is not coming with the devil resurging from the depts, is the destruction of the economic and political administration of the world. Also what is going to destroy us all is that we have forgotten to appreciate and understands how worth values are. Whith that I retire myself. You could send me e-mails to and when I have a little time ( time...., we created time and now time controls us)I will answer your questions or doubts. Remember if you need something that I could help you I will serve you whenever you need it. Hopefully someone responds to this request I shall go.

Okay, let's get a few things straight people.
1. First off, as someone else said, you need to learn your history. I've known since I was 8 years old that Ben Franklin wrote those letters.
2. National Treasure is a movie, nothing more, nothing less.
3. There is no conclusive proof that the Knights Templar ever became the Freemasons. The Freemasons weren't even an official society until 1710, 400 years after the Templars disbanded.
4. The Templars did excavate under the Temple Mount while in Jerusalem, but what they found remains unknown. It is most likely that they found a replica of the Ark of the Covenant, there is evidence for that.
5. You can use ANYTHING to send a message through an Ottendorf cipher. I could pick up a sales report from Wal-Mart and use it. You don't need something to be written for the express purpose of an Ottendorf cipher to send a message using an Ottendorf cipher.
Benjamin Franklin wrote the Silence Dogood letters for the sole purpose of satire, because his genius was somewhat repressed during his apprenticeship to his older brother; and using an assumed name was the only way to get his wit and intellect to the public.
6. Also, the Declaration of Independence; it could never have been treated the way it was in the movie. It would have been powder before Ben ever got it out of the Archives building. The very ink is peeling off of it. In 2003, the cases were replaced due to the chemical deposits collecting on the inside of the glass. The declaration was thoroughly examined, and there is nothing on the front or back to suggest a "secret treasure map".

Don't get me wrong, I love National Treasure, but it is pure fiction. Think of The DaVinci Code. Dan Brown melded fact and fiction together seamlessly to create a convincing (though heretical) book. National Treasure works off the same principle.
What a lot of you need to do is shut off the DVD player and go read some good history books. You'll learn more about Freemasonry, the Founding Fathers, the Templars, and America itself from books than you ever would from watching National Treasure. The books might help your grammar too.
