The giddy 1990s. The decade of Clinton, stock-market bubbles, and the rise of the internet. But in addition to all the technological and economic utopianism that characterized the decade, there were also new fears of loss of privacy, cyberterrorism, and identity theft. Plus, the hoaxes. Hundreds, even thousands of them began circulating by email and on the web. In fact, the internet turned out to be the most fertile breeding ground for hoaxes ever devised, making the 1990s the beginning of a new Golden Age of Hoaxes.
