Link with Lots of Pics!

These are the squatters who took over married Labour MPs Ann and Alan Keen’s ‘main home’ after it had been left empty for almost a year.

The group of six men and four women unfurled banners from the top windows of the £385,000 house to protest at the couple’s ‘outrageous’ expense claims.

Messages included ‘Reclaiming your taxes’, ‘Fight political corruption’ and ‘500,000 homeless, one million empty homes’.

The house, in Mrs Keen’s constituency in Brentford, West London, has missing floors, half-built walls and piles of sand in the rooms following a dispute with builders.

Despite the fact that the couple have not lived in the house for almost a year, Mrs Keen describes it as her main home.

This meant the Keens, who have been nicknamed ‘Mr and Mrs Expenses’ could claim up to £40,000 a year in expenses on their ‘second home’ - a luxury flat nine miles away in Westminster.

The squatters were told about the empty house in by an angry local resident.

One of the group, known only as ‘Bob’, said: ‘There are so many people who need homes, so for taxpayers to be paying for MPs to have two homes while one lies empty like this is disgusting.’

The squatters have vowed to stay until they are forced out.

But neighbours have backed the group, who are aged between 17 and 30, by giving food, clothes and bedding.

In return the squatters last night held a barbecue for them.

Father-of-four Dave Twells, 54, a construction worker who has lived nearby for 30 years, said the group had his ‘100 per cent support’ and added: ‘What these MPs have done with their expenses is disgusting.’

And another neighbour, driver Michael Weston, 67, said: ‘It is better having this lot here than the Keens.

‘Alan has been round now and then, but I haven’t seen her here for two years.

‘They are too busy claiming money to come by. The feeling around here is that we don’t want them moving back in anyway.’

The Keens said last night that they had lived in the house for more than 22 years.

In a statement, they added: ‘It is our home and has been very special to us for a long time.

‘We find it extremely upsetting to know that our house is occupied by squatters who appear to believe that they are entitled to do what they wish in our property.’

Looking at the picture captions and such, it seems these politicians have become quite adept at submitting claims for gov’t funds.  It’s sad when they are so obvious about their main focus being the cash, not what they can do for the people they supposedly represent. downer

Good for them. The house isn’t really that nice to be honest. I was expecting a mansion.

Since they claim it as their main house, maybe they should make the MP’s live in it for the majority of their year?

It looks as though they were going for some sort of a “Victorian Era town-house” look.  It’s actually not that bad looking, aside from the brickwork.

You’re right, Acci.  i figured they would have some sort of regulation stating that they actually had to live in the house for a certain portion of every year to be able to claim it.

Then again, we have a state senator that hasn’t actually lived or spent any real time here in something like twenty YEARS.  How people figure he can still be “in touch” with the issues we face and keep re-electing them is beyond me….. shut eye
