CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (AP)—Ever wonder if that spouse, friend or co-worker on the other end of the phone is really paying attention? The “Jerk-O-Meter” may hold the answer.
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are developing software for cell phones that would analyze speech patterns and voice tones to rate people—on a scale of 0 to 100 percent—on how engaged they are in a conversation.

I don’t think not paying attention is the same as being a jerk.
If someone phones when I’m particularly busy at work, of course they’re only going to get half my attention.
I reckon the people who buy this, then demand more attention if the other person gets a low score, are more likely to be the jerks.

Voice stress analysis has been thoroughly debunked for decades. If this thing worked as advertised, it would qualify for the JREF million dollar prize.
But I’ll bet that they’re “too busy” to win a million bucks.

Since the tests are designed by the applicant, not JREF, the designers certainly try to rig them.
And if “bad vibes” interfere with your magic powers, you have no magic powers.

They come out with some pretty bad excuses, don’t they?
(Hoping you knew my last post was pro-Randi)

Maybe this would be a good product for the tone-deaf… but I would guess that the average human brain can do the same thing with ten times more accuracy.
