M&Ms;were developed so that soldiers could eat chocolate without getting sticky fingers.

Contrary to the advertising, M&M;‘s DO melt in your hand.  Yeah, figured that one out that hard way.

Eating a packet of crisps a day is the equivalent to drinking five litres of cooking oil a year.

How big is the packet? Seems pretty vague, “a packet of crisps”...

The number of people alive on the Earth right now is higher than the number of all the people that have died…..Ever.

Already disproven!  Snopes
They also have a pretty good discussion going on the Snopes forum.

Well, just looking through and going by what I already know, rather than doing any research:

These ones are sorta wrong, kind of, in a way:

*To see a rainbow you must have your back to the sun.
(You don’t need to actually have your back to the sun, you just need to be able to see in the opposite direction from you than is the sun)

*The Sanskrit word for ‘War’ means ‘Desire for more cows’.
(It’s more a case of the word meaning “desire for cows” also being an alternate synonym for “war”)

*Beleif in ther existence of vacuums used to be punishable by death under church law.
(In some church law at some point it’s quite likely, but in much other church law it wasn’t)

*Every year in the US,more people are killed by deer than by any other animal.
(Depends on how you define “animal”, or for that matter “killed by”)

*In ancient Egypt ,when a cat died,it was mandatory for it’s owner to shave off his eyebrows to show his grief.
(Only in certain religious sects)

*The steam engine was invented in ancient Greece.
(It was invented by a Greek, but if I remember right it was by Heron in Alexandria.  So it was invented in a Hellenic land, but not actually in Hellas.  Nor was it exactly a steam engine, since it was basically just the steam-powered version of a pin-wheel:  it was just a toy that spun around to amuse people.  As a side note, he also invented vending machines for in use in temples.)

*Chameleons do not change colour to match their backgrounds.
(Sometimes their colour change is to become camouflaged, sometimes not)

*Pope John XII and Attilla the hun both died whilst having sex.
(While it’s hard to say for sure about Attila, the best contemporary source (Priscus) says that during his wedding festivities Attila basically got drunk, fell into a stupor, and basically choked to death on his own vomit.  Other people say that he was murdered.  I don’t know about the Pope.)

*Each king in a pack of playing cards represents a great king from history: Spades-King David ,Clubs-Alexander the Great ,Hearts-Charlamagne and Diamonds-Julius Caeser.
(Probably some people or groups did assign such names to those cards, but it’s far from universal.  Especially since the idea of kings in cards came from the Middle East. . .why would they have Caesar or Charlamagne?)

*In ancient Greece, children of wealthy families were dipped in olive oil at birth to keep them hairless throughout their lives.
(In ancient Greece, there was no ancient Greece.  There was Euboea, and Attica, and Lacedaemon. . .they didn’t really act united, and they had differing customs.  While some may have done this, others probably wouldn’t have.)

*Ghandi didn´t allow his wife to take pennicilin to save her life from pneumonia but took quinnine to save himself from malaria.
(From what I heard, she refused to take it herself.  Which does somewhat make sense in a way, since she died during WWII when penicillin was still new and probably not all that available for everyday use.)

And these ones are totally wrong:

*Squirrels cannot contract rabies.
(They can and do)

*The oldest known vegetable is the pea.
(Ferns predate peas)

*Everything weighs one per cent less at the equator.
(This is badly worded:  1% compared to where else?  Things do weigh slightly less on the equator than at the poles, but it is far far far far less than 1%)

*Carniverous animals will not eat another animal that has been hit by a lightning strike.
(They will, though at that point they’re being more scavenger than carnivore)

*Ants dont sleep.
(The ones that don’t die in Winter go dormant.)

*The only wild camels in the world are in Australia.
(And Asia, and Africa, and South America, and—according to local legend in the region—the Southwest of the US where the Army’s Camel Corps was disbanded.)

*In ancient Rome, when a man testified in court he would swear on his testicles.
(Probably based on the false connection between the word “testify” and “testicle”.)

*All human beings have four nostrils.
(Ummm. . .)

*The first time women and men used separate toilets was in 1739 at a Paris ball
(The idea of separate facilities goes back far earlier than that.)

*Reigndeer were the first animals ever to be domesticated.
(Not according to any reports that I’ve seen; I believe that dogs are still considered to be the oldest domesticated critters.)

*Balsa is the world’s strongest wood.
(It is fairly strong relative to its weight, and it is flexible, but it is one of the weakest around.)

*Loofahs come from trees (not the sea).
(Only of the loofa vine happens to be hanging from a tree.)

*Shrimps are the loudest thing in the ocean.
(Let’s see:  whales, drumfish, ships, volcanoes, demolitions, torpedoes, underwater nuclear tests. . .)

*“To be or not to be :that is the question, whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune”

Is an anagram of

“In one of the bard’s best thought-of-tragedies,our insistent hero,Hamlet, queries on two fronts about how life turns rotten”
(Not quite, even with the spelling fixed.  But I’ll leave it to everybody else to figure how it doesn’t add up properly, just to drive people crazy wink .)

*Mountain goats are in fact small antelopes.

*Until the late 1990s,the RAF’s nuclear bombs could be activated by using a bicycle lock key.
(It took and takes a bit more than that.)

*Crocodiles are more closely related to birds than they are to reptiles.
(Crocodiles are reptiles.)

*The strongest muscle in the body is the tounge.
(Perhaps it may be the strongest in comparison to its mass, but it is not the strongest in absolute terms.  That would probably be some leg muscle, I expect.)

*The Himalayas cover one tenth of the Earth´s surface.
(If they mean the Earth’s entire surface, that would mean that the Himalayas would have to be about the size of Asia.  If they mean only the Earth’s land surface, then that means that they’d be about one third of Asia (seeing as how Asia is 30% of the land’s surface, if I remember right).  Either case simply doesn’t work.)

*The number of people alive on the Earth right now is higher than the number of all the people that have died…..Ever.
(The world population in 1900 was something like about one-third of what it is now.  Most of the people alive then are now dead.  The population in 1800 was about one-third of that in 1900, and all of those people are dead.  That gives you a number of people who have died in just the past two centuries alone that is nearly equal to around 45% the world’s current population.  You don’t have to go back too far to equal six billion.)

I think he’s right with the reindeer

I’ve heard this before somewhere
and reindeer would be a more logical
choice since the first animals were domesicated
to work on farms and reindeer would be more
efficient pulling heavy things around than dogs would.

Acci also doesn’t seem to realise what his own numbers show
at the rate he lists of 1/3 the pop for each century that has passed
1900 - 33%
+ 1800 - 44%
+ 1700 - 48%
+ 1600 - 50%
+ 1500 - 51%
+ 1400 - 51.3%
+ 1300 - 51.4%

Somehow these figures seem wrong to me but…

Lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist
In Western Australi

Little Accipiter loved that girl enough
He told her jokes and crazy facts
And other forum stuff

Smerk the cutest dragon:
Traveled cross the sea,
To hunt her prey in foriegn lands,
And snuggle with Acci!

Smerk the cutest dragon
Is getting married now they say
Though little Accipiter
Has yet to name the day.
