I posted this in another thread, but there is a follow up. So I think it warrants its own thread now.

ROME - An Italian priest is backtracking from his idea to organize an online beauty pageant for nuns.

The priest says he has been misunderstood and has incurred the protests of the faithful as well as local religious authorities.

Rev. Antonio Rungi had thought of the beauty contest to give nuns more visibility within the Catholic Church and to fight the stereotype that they are all old and dour.

The “Miss Sister 2008” contest was supposed to start in September on a blog run by the priest, who is a theologian and schoolteacher from the Naples area.

But he changed his mind after seeing reports that suggested nuns would be metaphorically put on a catwalk.

He said what he had in mind was not just external beauty but what he called “overall beauty.”

“I wanted to make a blog on vocations, one where everybody could bring their own experiences,” Rungi said by telephone from his town of Mondragone, about 55 kilometres north of Naples. “I wanted to create a showcase for the pastoral experience of nuns.”

“Instead, they made it look like it was a catwalk a la Miss Italy,” he said. “I have been misunderstood.”

The reverend said he cancelled the plan because of attacks against him, as well as phone calls and emails and the reported unease of his religious superiors over the idea.

Still, Rungi said he hopes the idea can be revived in the future, if he can bring on board local religious authorities.

Original Story.

ROME - An Italian priest says he has decided to organize an online beauty pageant for nuns.

Rev. Antonio Rungi, a theologian and schoolteacher from the Naples area, says he wants to fight the stereotype that nuns are all old and dour.

The “Miss Sister 2008” contest will start in September on a blog run by Rungi. Visitors to the site will have a month to “vote for the nun they consider a model.”

Nuns will fill out a profile, including information about their life and vocation, and provide the website with a photograph.

It will be up to them to choose whether to pose with the traditional veil or with their heads uncovered.

But Rungi says web surfers can forget it if they think they’ll be finding any bikini-clad nuns.

“We are not going to parade nuns in bathing suits,” Rungi said by telephone from his town of Mondragone. “But being ugly is not a requirement for becoming a nun. External beauty is gift from God, and we mustn’t hide it.”

Rungi said the idea was first suggested to him by nuns with whom he regularly prays and works. He hopes there will be dozens of submissions once the web site is started.

The contest drew criticism from the association of Catholic teachers.

“It’s an initiative that belittles the role of nuns who have dedicated themselves to God,” the group’s president, Alberto Giannino, told Italy’s ANSA news agency Sunday.
