I’ve heard a bit about this story today and this really pisses me off.  The kid can’t pitch because he’s too good?  Because his pitches are too fast?

Sorry.  That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.  I’m really sick of “protecting” the kids and making sure everyone wins, everyone gets a trophy, there are no losers and there are no winners.  Winning and losing and having someone be better at you in something is a basic fact of life.  Help your kids deal with it and learn about it.

If your kid isn’t good enough or, more likely in this case, the other kid is just that much better then as a parent you deal with it and help your kid deal with it.  You explain that it’s not their fault.  You explain that the other player is just really good.  And, more importantly, you HELP your child practice and try to get better (even if they will never get to the same level).

This is just ridiculous.

And if the part about him being targeted because he declined the offer to play for the championship team is true this story has a whole new level of disgust.  I’m not even going there.

Actually, this is an outrage especially because this comes from a society that presses (sometimes beyond duress) children to excel.  This is a competitive society and this child is a gifted prodigy who should be encouraged NOT discouraged.  Anyone of any age who can pitch with such targeted finesse is hardly a hazard to anyone no matter the speed (isn’t this what we want our young baseball players to push for), but is instead so accurate that hazard has been pointedly NILL!

League officials suggested that Jericho play other positions, or pitch against older players or in a different league.

Reminds me of recent events…. IE: Chinese gymnasts.

I never get to post good news. raspberry
Anyway i read the story and its just plain corruption. Its obvious that the officials want the last winner of the Championship to win again.
There are reasons.
1) they want the last year champions to win again.
2)Fun because it said in the yahoo article that a team forfeited once they saw him in the base.
3)Safety…The kid throws at 40 mph.!!
Im pretty amazed that he can throw a ball 40mph. to me something like that or being able to do that is the equivalent to steroids..

40 mph?  How does he compare to the average professional baseball pitcher?

Completely ignoring any shady motives in this whole thing, there may actually be some truth to the idea that he shouldn’t pitch in these games.  Perhaps if the kid really is hugely beyond all the other players in his league, he ought to be moved on up to a higher-level league.  Assuming that such a higher-level league exists and that he qualifies for it.

Yhup, I think so too. The world record is 103mph I believe.
But still, for a nine year old to throw at 40mph, impressive to say the least.
