True, people wo can reasonably expect tips *do* get paid less, even less than minimum wage, in some areas.
In many cultures, however, tipping just isn’t something they *do*. It’s not because theyr’e cheapskates or anything, it’s just that service is generally assumed to be part of the cost of the meal.
I try to tip when I can. Usually 10 or 20 percent, since it’s easier to figure, though I’ll often just ‘round up’ to the next full dollar amount.
Even when I was homeless, and coming into the local Denny’s for a cup of hot tea and some toast to tide me over until morning, I would startle the waitresses by leaving a tip.
I will admit to leaving an ‘insult tip’ of a single nickel once, due to some staggering incompetance and rudeness on the part of the server, but my usual response to such annoyances is to write in ‘No Tip’ in the section for such things on the credit slip.
When dining on Halloween, I have been known to leave a tip for $6.66, which is fairly generous considering I rarely top $15 for my meals.
