MELBOURNE, Australia - A pet rabbit was credited with saving a couple from a raging fire that swept through their home in the southern Australian city of Melbourne early Thursday.

The family pet named “Rabbit” scratched at the couple’s bedroom door as they slept and woke the man up, Metropolitan Fire Brigade commander Mick Swift said.

The husband, whose identity was not released, discovered a fire in a back room and smoke spreading quickly through the house. Thanks to the rabbit, the couple was able to escape unharmed, he said.

“The rabbit saved the couple from injury,” Swift said.

The blaze caused substantial damage to the house before it was extinguished by firefighters.

My cat once saved my life. Woke my parents up when I was having a diabetic seizure. It’s a shame we could not save him from the cancer he got.  downer

Apparently not.  Probably a good thing in this case.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you’re a mile away and you have their shoes.

Depends on the culture and connection to the pet…

A free roaming Rabbit may be as common to them as an indoor Feline…..

Yep. Lots of folks have House Rabbits. They can be litterbox trained very easily, though they have a tendency to gnaw on things if you’re not careful. Friend of ine has a Flemish Giant house rabbit.. It’s.. Um.. big. Takes up a good chunk of the couch.

I had a dwarf rabbit that was free roaming and litterbox trained. She would hang out with the cats and even use their litterbox instead of her own at times.

Not sure where the article got it’s info from…

The TV news here had an interview with the family and they said the Rabbit was in its cage in the Living room the whole time. And that it was thumping around loudly (not scratching at the bedroom door…).

One of those sources must have gotten things wrong LOL

Could be an entirely different story as well.

But is is a rare story to happen. Normally things in text are more to the truth. But I wouldn’t be shocked if your local news story is the right story. Lots of stories go by word of mouth. News is getting silly these days. Even one of the most decorated magazines (The New York Times) is declining in factual information.
