I wonder why a merkin wouldn’t work.  Isn’t this pretty much the one, very specific purpose of a merkin?

I thought the saying was “jerkin’ your gerkin” but merkin works too!
A very long time ago, I came across a story about how in Japan a full, um, pelt was considered so desireable there were weaves or wigs one could use to add fullness.

Yep, MLC. That’s actually where the merkin originated. It’s a corruption of the word ‘American’, which referenced the fact that - unlike the Japanese - US soldiers after WWII had a bit of hair going, which was something of a novelty to the protitutes of the time. Japanese men felt a bit.. inadequate.. without the shag carpeting, and so thus started wearing really badly-made chest and pubic wigs..

I’m highly skeptical of this story.

This page says that according to the OED, the term “merkin” meaning a pubic wig goes back to 1617. FWIW, Wikipedia agrees. 

So the post-WWII story doesn’t work.
