And something Alex didn’t mention in that announcement is that the forum can not be set up to host external avatars. The forum software is supplied by his web host company. They develop it and that is not something they have offered in the forum software. And probably not something they want to offer since having the avatars hosted here ups the bandwidth usage and can (like in Alex’s case) require the users to pay more for more bandwidth.
Alex was able to get the forum to use Gravatar avatars. The other option would have been for no avatars. He did the best he could with what he had to work with.
