I’ve always been a bit anti-PETA, seeing as they seem to attract the worst social misfits and make them feel justified by giving them a casue. Oh, and they kill puppies and kittens because, in their view, it’s better to be dead than be a pet.

Anyway, I’d like to know how 10 PETA jurors would even KNOW what chicken tastes like? I dont think they’d be the best judges.
I’m also astounded by their logic that growing a Bonzai-kitten chicken is somehow a step forward in morality.
But, that’s PETA for ya.

$1m for putting test tube chicken on table

ANIMAL rights group PETA is putting up a $US1 million ($1.06m) reward for anyone who can grow test-tube meat that looks and tastes like the real thing.

“In-vitro meat production would use animal stem cells that would be placed in a medium to grow and reproduce. The result would mimic flesh and could be cooked and eaten,’’ PETA ( People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) said.

The reward would go to the participant who got a test-tube chicken into commercial production by 2012 and sold it in at least 10 US states at a competitive price.

A team of 10 PETA jurors would taste the entries to make sure they matched the texture and flavour of chicken, and they must score at least 80 out of 100 points to win the prize.

“More than 40 billion chickens, fish, pigs, and cows are killed every year for food in the United States in horrific ways,’’ PETA said.

“In-vitro meat would spare animals from this suffering. In addition, in vitro meat would dramatically reduce the devastating effects the meat industry has on the environment.’’

While humans didn’t need meat,  because many people refused to “kick their meat addictions”, PETA was willing to help them gain access to flesh that did not cause suffering and death, it said.

Researchers around the world are working on producing meat in a laboratory but it will be several years yet before in-vitro meat makes it onto the dinner table.

Hmmmmmm, I wonder how well that will sell. Think about it. To raise a real chicken requires little money. Just some food, meds to keep it healthy, and transportation to the slaughter house. For test tube chickens, I dont know what all you would need, but it seems to me that it would end up costing alot. That cost will reflect back on the price of the meat. I think I would go for the cheaper real chicken rather than the lab chicken. Also, why dont they use that $1 million to HELP existing animals? Oh, yeah, peta doesnt care about the animals that are alive.

More that I found. I have no websource for it as it was posted on another forum (yes, I am cheating on MoH, sorry) and the poster did not give a link.

The tissue, once grown, could be shaped and given texture with the kinds of additives and structural agents that are now used to give products like soy burgers a more meaty texture.

Doesnt that sound appetizing? sick

What would PETA think of cultured chicken flesh, I wonder? Since it would harm no animal in it’s production, is that ethical enough for them?

I wasn’t aware that this procedure didn’t work with adult stem cells.

you don’t need to kill anything to get stem cells.
