Aww, and I was about to post about this phenomenon in the Philippines.

Gruesome it may be, it still is a genuine expression of faith (as an extreme form of penance) by those that choose to partake in the ritual. What is so sad about it, to me, is how this event is now become a sort of carnival freak show for tourists and media.

And of course, with the birth of the artist came the inevitable afterbirth—the critic.

Actually, that would make it all even more like the original crucifixion would have been.  Executions were one part punishment for the individual, three parts entertainment for the masses back then.  If they’d had such items in 30 AD Jerusalem, then Jesus’ cross would have been surrounded by vendors selling t-shirts, disposable cameras, kosher hotdogs, and popcorn.

A public execution would not have been a quiet, dignified, solemn event.

the phil. is a very god fearing place because i live there (or in my case here) i know about these i can`t believe they would actually do this though.some wear a crown of thorns and whip themselves. its like wrestling people from all over come to see people get nailed and whipped it almost makes me feel pity for them
