What is so sad about it, to me, is how this event is now become a sort of carnival freak show for tourists and media.
Actually, that would make it all even more like the original crucifixion would have been. Executions were one part punishment for the individual, three parts entertainment for the masses back then. If they’d had such items in 30 AD Jerusalem, then Jesus’ cross would have been surrounded by vendors selling t-shirts, disposable cameras, kosher hotdogs, and popcorn.
A public execution would not have been a quiet, dignified, solemn event.
