If these people are so routinely oblivious to what’s going on around them when they’re walking along, then getting the occasional wake-up call from walking into a lamppost is probably a good thing. Maybe it will get the message across to them before they do something more drastic such as wander out into traffic or into an open drain. By telling them that they don’t need to take any sort of personal responsibility in such a basic thing as looking where they walk, they could get into the habit of thinking that everybody else is simply going to look out for them all the time.

Maybe leaving a few drains open might not be a bad idea. Darwin would probably take a hand in the situation then.
All right.. I can see this.. this is a good thing.. just make it so that in addition to the padding, there is also an air horn attached.. Someone bumps into it, they get jolted back to reality, good and hard.
Hmmm. . .or how about “reactive lampposts”? Somebody bumps into it, and a big spring knocks the person across the pavement into another lamppost, which launches him into yet another, and so on like a giant pinball game. Having that happen a few times might get people to actually take their eyes off their phones every now and then and look around.
I say that we at the Museum of Hoaxes forum start a movement to fight this. We can go around and police these stupid people. We can slap them to make them more aware of their surroundings, stand right in front of them and give a little push when they walk into us, slap them with tickets (right on their foreheads and hanging down over their faces). Anything to make them look up and pay attention to where they’re going.

Aww, thanks Tah! Okay, on the subject of abbreviations, (acronyms?) what do ETA and NSFW stand for? I know one meaning for ETA but I don’t think that’s what’s meant the couple times I’ve seen it.
