‘Nevermind’ baby labels album cover ‘creepy’

Nearly two decades after becoming the music world’s most famous naked swimming baby, California high school student Spencer Elden says he feels like a porn star.

The 17-year-old Los Angeles teenager was the centrepiece of one of the most iconic record sleeves of all time. In 1991, a photo of him swimming underwater graced the cover of Nirvana’s hit album Nevermind.

But Elden has admitted in an interview with MTV.com that his small role in music history has given him mixed feelings.

“It’s kind of creepy that that many people have seen me naked,” Elden said.

“I feel like I’m the world’s biggest porn star.”

Nevermind became a huge success for Seattle-based grunge-rock band Nirvana, whose lead singer Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994.

The album sold over 10 million copies in the US alone.

While Elden has never seen a penny of royalties, he continues to make money from media requests.

He also attends school and is working part-time in a juice bar.

He hopes to one day become an airline pilot.

I wonder how much his parents were paid for the original shoot?

What surprised me was that my MOM had that album after it came out!

I always wondered whose baby it was.  Like if it belonged to someone in the band or was a stock photo or something.

I think he was the child of some friends of either the band or the photographer.

I don’t like Nirvana. I just never saw why everyone thought they were such geniuses.

Renquest in a way I agree with you.  They had a few good songs but I wouldn’t classify them on the genius level

I never claimed they were geniuses, but I do like their music.

Of course some say I am biased for reasons that shall remain unnamed wink

So he makes money off of media requests for something that took no effort on his part, and happened when he was a baby? Sounds like an attention-person-of-ill-repute to me. He just wants more publicity so that he can make more money off the media exposure, otherwise he’d refuse media requests and keep his silly mouth shut.

Whilst I shan’t go as far as Renquist (and don’t necessarily agree with his musical taste), I do agree with his general point.

I personally believe that, had Cobain not comitted suicide, Nirvana would have been yet another run-of-the-mill grunge band.
As it is, they never faced the accusations of ‘going downhill’, or ‘selling out’.

As for the ‘Nevermind’ guy, I can understand his creeped out feelings. But, if it were me, I would avoid the media like the plague.
