Since eastern europe is still connected with 14k4 modems it took a while for this little news item to come to us.
On july 26 2007 Croats saw a spectacular fly-by of a meteorite (super koegla bolid in Croatic).
It seems the meteorite exploded in the air. Wasn´t seen on radar, had a speed of 200.000 km/s (according to the article, which is a bit quick to say the least). The flash at 1,5 km altitude had a intensity (?) of 300 to 400 Mwatt.
Since it dissapeared it could also have been a starting warp engine or fotonengine.

However, here is the newsarticle and video:

About ten years ago my wife and I were standing at night outside enjoying the cool summer night, when suddenly something like this passed us overhead. We still remember the strange fluttering sound (as a far away thunderstorm, when the thunder is so weak to hear that you wonder if you heard a plane in the distance or a truck) it made and the trajectory. We had a clear 360 view, because we staying in an old mill just outside the village on top of a hill. It just came out of nowere, lighting up and making a trail and when it passed we started to hear it. And just as it came it dissapeared again. Just in straight line. It was awesome and one of those things you never forget.

I’ll bet people are going to be looking for pieces now.  There has to be some scattered around the area somewhere.

Many years ago I saw something like that during a meteor shower, although I didn’t see it explode.  It started off as a bright green blob off in the western sky, and passed overhead easterwards with a really loud sound like dropping something into a hot frying pan full of oil.  It was good sized, too, comparatively looking to be about the size of a person’s thumbnail when held out at arm’s length.  It passed over the horizon, so I don’t know if it burned up or blew up or landed and released a giant Martian tripod.

Of course, any pieces are likely smaller than sand grains.  Hopefully the searchers have some fine tweezers.

WARNING

Most if not all of the imagery in that video is NOT the Croatian bolide in question.

The still attached to Beasjt’s post is an old image from a video taken months ago in Mexico, and it does not show a true bolide at all: but a military jet with it’s afterburner on.

And part of the footage shown is computer-generated for an ad campaign.

That said, there was a bolide over Croatia indeed: but all that footage shown is simply not-related to it. Seems Croatian TV just scraped anything from their archives that remotely resembles a bright meteor to illustrate the story.

Oh, and the figures given are definitely wrong too. 1.5 km is much too low for an end explosion. And 200.000 km/s (200 km/s?) much too fast. No meteor goes faster than 70 km/s (otherwise its in an hyperbolic orbit) and in order for anything to survive it has to be below 30 km/s.

And by far not always these bright bolides result in meteorites on the ground. They can burn up completely. They can be chunks of (cometary) ice. Etcetera.

Meteors this bright are not very common but not extremely rare either. A few each year are seen.

Okay, just a quick summary of what this footage shows:

00:10-00:16s   This is the fighter jet with afterburner footage shot months ago in Mexico

00:41-00:44s   This is a very old photograph by a Finnish observer who’s name I have forgotten

01:00-01:28s   This is computer-generated animation for a Spanish advertising campaign

The only image I haven’t seen earlier and don’t recognize is the still image between 00:36-00:38. However: it does not look like how a meteor looks on a photograph. In fact it looks fake.

So there is, I think, NO true footage of the Croatian bolide in that video at all, unless the still between 00:36-00:38 is, which I strongly doubt as it looks very fake.

In other words: perhaps this video should be posted in the Hoax section.

Wow, that was fast mods…!  LOL

For clarity: the bolide did appear and is no hoax, but all this footage shown on TV purportedly showing it is a hoax.
