Yeah, I keep our hamster up high. She can see him, but not get him out of the cage. She’s pretty good with him though, but I don’t let her hold him, just let her pet him while he’s in my hand/lap. You have an older kid though which is harder. Mr. Bojangles has never bitten, but many of them do, especially if they feel they are being handled rough.
My 2 yo keeps opening the cage and trying to grab him which he interprets as rough handling (which it is). He had bit her twice and my son once. So he is going back and in a month we will have a dog and maybe get some fish again. The hamster had pretty much taken up residence in the tubes that are attached to his cage, I guess he feels safer there.
