I have passed a few minutes with Eddie Montgomery.  He happens to be buds with a member of my hubby’s family.

Oh, gee, I forgot!

When I was 10 years old or so, I shook John F. Kennedy’s hand, he was Senator Kennedy then, running for President against Richard Nixon.

Dan, still remembering it quite well, Acci’s mention of Jimmy Carter jogged my memory

Working in hotel I can say I’ve at least encountered several celebrities.  None of them I have really met, talked to at length or could claim to have known.  Like Sharruma, I can’t say I get too excite about meeting most of these people.  Part of that is because of my job.  Professionally, I can’t get all excited and fawning and asking for autographs from these people.  And partly because I don’t care enough to.  They’re people and want to be left alone for the most part.  When you get the ones that want special treatment and want things free I enjoy treating them normally all the more.

Let’s see.  Since I generally don’t care I’m sure I’ll forget a lot, but here are ones that stick out in my mind.

Buddy Epsen stayed at the hotel I worked at.  My manager was a huge fan and talked to him for about a half hour.  I was involved in some of that conversation (but I’m the one who had to wander off and help other guests from time to time).  Super, super, super nice guy.

Wil Wheaton stayed there, too.  Not at the same time.  Talked briefly with him when he checked out.

Steve Schirripa was the Entertainment Director the first couple years I worked at the Riviera Hotel & Casino.  Talked with him and interacted with him a lot on several occasions.  When he left the Riv it was becuase he got offered this part on some show called The Sopranos.  (It looks like he had other bit parts before that, but I never knew it.  Nor cared.)

John Elway stayed at the hotel I currently work at once.  Nothing more than a passing “hello” though.  Funny story involving him however: At the time I was working night audit (graveyard shift).  One of the servers from the lounge came up to turn in her paperwork and was rather embarrassed.  She had served him and didn’t realize it.  She said, “has anyone ever told you that you look like John Elway.”  His casual reply was, “yeah, I get that from time to time.”  He signed his bill back to his room.  She thought he was messing with her until she looked it up in the computer and verified the name.

Bo Jackson stayed, too.  (Not at the same time as John Elway.)  He is a person I would love to meet and be able to sit down with and have a chat.  Alas, I only got to nod and say hello as we passed in the lobby.

Robert Englund I got to help and chat with briefly when I was at the Riviera.  That was neat.

Kevin Farley (brother of Chris Farley) was at the resort last week.  I saw/heard him talking to one of the girls at the front desk.  I didn’t care enough to find out why he was there or if he was staying.  But she was helping him set up a dinner reservation.

Donald Bellasario has stayed at the resort a couple times.

When I worked at Whiskey Pete’s Hotel & Casino (where I met Buddy Epsen and Wil Wheaton) I got to check in several country and western singers when they came to play at our show room.  Don’t remember any of them, but mostly I just got to meet their managers when they came to check in for the star.  Loretta Lynn may have been one, I’m not sure.  But it doesn’t really sound impressive to say, “I met Loretta Lynn’s manager!”

When I worked at the Riviera I got to meet a lot of comedians when they came through to work at the comedy club.  They didn’t necessarily stay at the hotel, but being a manager does get you around the hotel and not always stuck behind the front desk.

I got to meet Pia Zadora in passing one time at the Riv.  She had some connection to the hotel because of some connection with past ownership.  I don’t remember and don’t care what that connection even was.  Why did I even mention her?

The Riviera also had ties to the Adult Film Industry.  I got to meet some of those “stars” when they came through the hotel.  Jenna Jameson is the one that sticks out the most (sorry for the pun).  But that was because one of the guys at the front desk was completely ga ga for her.  He would always know when she was coming and would do whatever he could for her if he got the chance to offer to do anything for her.  It was quite sad.

I sat next to Martin Jarvis on the London Underground once while he was dressed in what looked for all the world like a Nazi Uniform. Noticing the looks he was getting he announced, “It’s for an episode of Doctor Who.” Which seemed to satisfy everybody. So if you ever need to dress like a Nazi, terrorist, alien or axe-wielding psycho on the Underground, remember this excuse.

I also chatted with Charles Dance briefly on a train to Paddington. He’d had his hair cut very short and looked a bit glum about it, I said that you get used to it after a while, but he didn’t seem particularly convinced. He later explained he’d had it cut for a film role, he was playing a doctor in the upcoming Alien movie. He absolutely refused to give anything away, however.

Oh, yes, I forgot another fun celebrity whom I met, although he wasn’t actually a celebrity at the time.  I spent some social time (including going to Point Defiance and to an aquarium in Seattle) with Gary Ridgway.  He was the long-term babysitter of the children of a friend of mine who worked in Fort Lewis.

I’ve got a few clients who are well known in their area, I guess.
John Kinsella
The Triffids, including band members Alan MacDonald, Jill Birt and Martyn Casey (who’s also a part of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds).
A couple of local actresses, a tv show director and playwrite also are included in our client base.

This is my mum.  I also did a bit of modelling in this particular book.  Sorry, no photos!
One of my mum’s friends.

And I’m surprised neither Boo or Mouse have mentioned that we spent a week with this celebrity…

It’s funny this is here…a friend of mine went to an adult convention this past weekend & met Jenna Jameson, Ron Jeremy, and a slew of other celebs from the adult industry & has been so excited about it she can’t stop talking about it!  smile

As for ME…Well, I live in a sport town…So I have met or been in the same places as our local team members…Tampa Bay Bucs.  Tampa Bay Lightening (Stanley Cup winners).  The Devil Rays…I haven’t been overly excited or ever recognized them myself…but I have been with friends who have, or been in a situation where their names were plastered all over & I would HAVE to recognize them.

I met some of the Harlem Globetrotters, post game.

When I was 17 I met Paolo Montalban (no relation to Ricardo) after his performance in Cinderella (Rodgers & Hammerstein version).  He was much taller than I would have expected…and when I happened to be back in the area of the performing arts center that same weeked, my friends and I went back to the stage door to see if we could meet the cast again, b/c there weren’t as many people waiting (Sunday Matinee).  He was really nice & talked to us for quite a while.

Also at the stage door, I met Debbie (not Deborah) Gibson.  She was very pleasant & personable.  Eartha Kitt was much tinier than I expected.  Not as personable…but then I figured, she’s been around a while, she may be over trying to “win” fans with her personality.  When she saw I had on a jacket w/ the Bat symbol, she purred at me.

There was a situation when I was at the Florida State Fair one year (I was young - maybe 9?) that there were a bunch of wrestler’s there, with their families.  I only remember someone mentioning The British Bulldog specifically.  He was on the bumper cars at the time.  He looked horribly cramped, but also like he was having a ton of fun!

When I worked at the library, I met a few authors.  Most of whom I didn’t know, and couldn’t tell you now who they were in particular.

I think that’s it for me.  I was a “celebrity” once when I visited my old 5th grade class room.  (I would have been about 15.)  The kids were really excited to see someone who had lived through it, I guess.  wink

Since my sister has been working at Disney she hasn’t had that many interesting encouters, but she did pose (as Snow White) with quite a few members of Davy Jones’ family.  His grandson was too shy for a picture, but to make it easier for him, “grandpa” jumped up & said he would love to have a picture with the princess.  My sister (didn’t know who he was) kept getting the old, “You really LOOK like Snow White!”  And she says, “But of course!  I AM Snow White!”  Then she told him what a handsome prince he was…and he blushed.  My sis also met Billy Ray Cyrus when she was about 4…she was invited up to the hotel room/suite thing & everything with my mom…Billy did lots of pictures for them…and she still hangs onto them…she figures when she gets famous she will show it to him one day.  LOL

I guess…I can claim I am Snow White’s big sister…so I know a celebrity all the time.  Does that count?  wink

And is there any cause why these two should not be married?
