Okay, on the radio the other day, the disc-jockey stated that, in his opinion, ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’ by Marvin Gaye is the greatest recording ever.

I agree that the song is truly great.

But, you know, ‘Greatest Ever’ is a pretty big conditional.  I can think of several other recordings that are pretty damned good, too.  Songs like “Satisfaction’ by The Rolling Stones, ‘A Day In The Life’ by the Beatles, ‘Crocodile Rock’ by Elton John, ‘Peggy Sue’ by Buddy Holly, ‘Now Or Never’ by Elvis, ‘Legs’ by ZZ Top, ‘Maybelline’ by Chuck Berry, and so many others.

So much of music is simply personal taste, you know?  I get really emotional when I hear ‘Mr. Bojangles’ by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and I absolutely love the rather bubble-gum ‘Dreams’ by The Cranberries.

Go figure!

Is there a way to compile a voter’s list to see what the favorite recording of the very esteemed and eclectic posting members of this noted forum deem their favorite?

Dan the Music lover, reading in ‘Stereophile’ magazine about a pair of speakers that are ‘only $ 27,500.00 a pair’, but that includes set-up and delivery, can I please start a solicitation to help me buy them?  I have aleady saved almost six dollars by myself.

So Many to choose from, can I do a top hundred?

Looking Glass - The Gods
Granny Takes a Trip - The Purple Gang
Sydney Gill - Smoke
10000 Words In A Cardboard Box - Aquarian Age
Rainbow Chaser - Nirvana
A Song For All Seasons - Renaissance
Devil’s Answer - Atomic Rooster
Conquistador -Procol Harem
Eve And The Apple - Shocking Blue
No More White Horses - T2

I find it very hard to choose a favourite, even a top ten.
This is just a selection of my favourite pieces, in no particular order
and I’m barely scraping the surface.

I think we should pick the top 64 then put them on a chart like in the NCAA basketball tournament.  Then each song is only compared to one other song at a time.  And eventually, we get the ultimate top rock song!  Who’s with me?  I think that would be fun!!1

(note: edited to add the “1")

So you want me to name 54 more songs?

I’ll do that a little later, I’m busy right now

What’s the greatest rock/pop/blues song of all time?  Why, the one I’m listening to, of course!  cheese

I don’t really have an engraved-in-stone set of favourites.  It’s basically whatever I feel in the mood for.  Rock/pop/blues Songs that I’ve played in the last day or two that I really enjoy, though, include:

Led Zeppelin - “When the Levee Breaks”
Khaled - “Alech Taadi”
Muddy Waters - “Crosseyed Cat”
Billy Idol - “White Wedding”
Buffalo Springfield - “Bluebird”
Creedence Clearwater Revival - “Run Through the Jungle”
Def Leppard - “Pour Some Sugar On Me”
Jimi Hendrix - “Voodoo Child”
Shakira - “Suerte”
Queen - “Breakthru”
B.B. King - “Peace to the World”
Steppenwolf - “Magic Carpet Ride”
Three Dog Night - “Joy to the World”
The Verve Pipe - “The Freshmen” (for sappy, sentimental reasons)
Iron Maiden - “The Prisoner”
Rammstein - “Wo Bist Du”

Feel free to procede with mocking my musical tastes.  I will be keeping a list of people’s names.  wink

Red Hot Chili Pepper’s “Naked in the Rain” or Smashing Pumpkin’s “Bullet with Butterfly wings”

Hey, all of mine were at least from within the past hundred years!  Isn’t that recent enough?
