When the message is “Be a good person” I find religion quite comforting. I’d rather believe in God than humanity, because human beings are generally crap

And I don’t believe anyone who tells me what God wants me to do. If God wants to communicate someone to me He’ll pull a Joan of Arc and I’ll wake up with a flaming angel in my room.

The problems start when people put their religeous beliefs on a pedestal and expect everything to conform to them. Their god is inerrent, so their beliefs are inerrent; in christians, this is the sin of pride as they are basically saying they are inerrent.
