I quite like the part where the doctors don’t think she’ll live, but the lady doesn’t know this yet, but the priest does. Did God tell him about it or don’t doctors believe in patient confidentiality over there?

I’ve been online for almost 20 years and I’ve never received a Nigerian scam email. What am I doing wrong?

I am from South Africa (I immigrated to Canada, before you say anything, Capt Al) these kinds of things don’t happen very often there. What on the earth is he thinking? This is what Breast Cancer charities are for. And 13 million dollars US is a lot of money, especially in South Africa. Why is he talking to you about it? Why doesn’t he just start a bloody charity?

The real question is, if it is so obviously a scam, how the hell to enough people fall for it to make it profitable?

Well, it doesn’t actually cost the scammer anything, so I suppose that even getting one or two of the thousands of people he e-mails it to gives him a great profit.

Also, Razela, if you do get to scam one or two people for a few hundred bucks, that is quite a lot of money for someplace like Nigeria (or about any other third world nation). If the scammers get you to stick with it for long enough, they actually have you fly out to Africa to look at their operations or meet government officials, etc. People who go out sometimes wind up getting mugged for their passports (worth a bundle on the black market) or held for ransom (or both).

Here is a similar scam I got recently:
