well.. this just ruined my day

Another gem from the Weekly World News.

yeah.. now that i think about it, the Weekly World News doesnt seem like a very credible source.. considering they have an article on a guy who got a deed to the moon from aliens..

To avoid widespread panic, NASA has declined to make the alarming discovery public. But Dr. Sherwinski’s contacts at the agency’s Chandra X-ray Observatory leaked to him striking images of the newly discovered chaos cloud obliterating a large asteroid.

This is a dead giveaway, for elsewhere it is said that the cloud:

is hurtling toward us at close to the speed of light—making its estimated time of arrival 9:15 a.m. EDT on June 1, 2014

Asteroids are objects in our solar system. So if an asteroid is already observed being obliterated now, the cloud would arrive in a few hours from now given its near light-speed - not in 9 years from now.

time to start selling your posessions and gathering upon the hilltops?

I know, could he sound more excited about the near extinction of the human race? Will make a good film though.

...Besides, everyone knows that Star Trek already figured out that we have 60-70 trillions years until the destruction of the universe.

Yay! So enough time to buy a new outfit first then? grins.

This doesn’t seem to be a movie script, actually.  The Yahoo site it’s from has entertainment news, gossip, and tabloid reports, and this is from the latter category.  There are a whole lot of other articles from the Weekly World News included on the same site (my favourite is the one where the Chinese finally admit that they can’t tell each other apart, either).

As for all the stuff about a giant cloud of mutated Hawking radiation coming towards us, I suspect that the writer simply read a few headlines in an astronomy journal and put together the article from that.  They might as well have written about Mars emitting a cloud of kippered herring that will bombard the Earth.  Either article would be about as scientifically accurate.  For anybody who actually might have believed the article:  don’t worry, it’s all nonsense.
