Well, guessing at the words that aren’t familiar to me…

Really, if this method of writing were to become more common, I would take ill (with an obstruction of the intestine?) at such a (desecration?) of my language. Please explain to me how anyone can, in conscience, read such clumsy terms at any speed in the first place? And how does one say them without feeling one has received a (blow?) to the throat?

I think the young people are overcome with (philosophical?) mirth at the older generation’s difficulties with such use of language, much in the manner that we laugh at the (idiots?) that frequent this site.

No, I say, this redundant (adulteration?) is to be resisted with the vigour of a (something something).

A quick glossary:

Illiack passion = stomach ache (i.e. a wind of the iliac).
Chalming = to chew to pieces (pronounced ‘cham’ ).
Prithee = Please (i.e. “I pray thee”).
Inwit = conscience (and opposite of outwit?).
Cowhanded = awkward.
Egg-wife’s trot = slow pace (i.e. the speed of one burdened with many eggs).
Wisternefet = a ringing slap or blow.
Weasand = the wind-pipe or throat.
Abderian = excessive laughter.
Badinage = chat, banter.
Badaud = credulous or dim-witted gossip (I love this word).
Macaronic = mixing of different languages.
Macrology = repititious use of language.
Rabiate = violent.
Ramoneur = chimney sweep.

Be honest, which is funnier…

I think this is silly.  Appropriate language in appropriate company.  Just like you refrain from saying “skullfuck” in front of your granmother, you refrain from lol-ing on a test at school.  I see NO PROBLEM with FORCING kids to use actually words to write an essay.  I have been texting & IMing since I was 14…(wow…almost a DECADE!) and I have never had any issues with simply typing or texting things out normally.  I do use some abbreviations…w/, dmg, covg - but a lot of my abbreviations I picked up from work.  How many times can you type out comprehensive deductible & always do it right?  Not many…so comp ded works fine IN MY FIELD.  However, when I am sending something to a friend, or non-industry person, I try to type it out the first time, and abbreviate it after that, so they will understand.

I use LOL sometimes, but I still think it’s a little weird to actually use.  I remember when they would get so long…“rotflmaoayatinatbihtime!”  Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off at you and thinking I need a tissue because I have tears in my eyes!

Seriously…those were so ridiculous.

What’s ‘dmg’ an abbreviation for?

And Matt used to say ROTFLUALOTTSTBD*, but that was as mockery (and for gross-out) for the people who really did use that sort of thing seriously.

Actually I knew that from D&D, ya young punk.

Heh. I had guessed it might be damage, but then I couldn’t think of a situation where it would be used often enough to require abbreviation.

I was a Traveller person myself (classic, of course). Mainly because of my youthful passion for Andre Norton’s Forerunner novels.
